My wife, I think I’ll keep her

She understands my aggravation when some devices connected to HE don’t behave.
One room in the house is persnickety when it comes to ZigBee devices. For example, the IKEA blinds in this room sometimes work, other times not. I have Lightify remotes to control the blinds in each room. This particular room must be on the corner of an abandoned Indian burial ground. The Lightify remote for this room will not pair and is not recognized by Hubitat other than as a device. So, after many many attempts at a correct discovery, it dawned on me to take a remote from a room that does work and just tell it to control a different set of blinds. Easy enough, right? When i physically move this remote to the Poltergeist room, “what we have here is...failure .. to communicate”.

She has gleaned a little information about repeaters while I am vocalizing my frustration explaining how they work in rudimentary terms (because I know just enough to be dangerous)

She noticed I had an IKEA repeater plugged in right next to where a Centralite ZigBee outlet was (it repeats the weak signal from the Hampton Bay ceiling fan controller). She said perhaps they were too close to each other. Not wanting to quickly dismiss her idea, I moved the IKEA repeater to a different outlet in that room, and now everything works.

Call it luck, but for now all things Zigbee in that room work as designed.

Oh, we just celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary November 7.

My wife often comes up with the simple solutions that I overlook as well.

I bought her a coaster a couple years ago that says “I’m not bossy, I just have better ideas”. I don’t know how many times she has repeated that statement to me after fixing my current issue.

Happy anniversary

Cherish every day. Never pass up an opportunity to say how much you love each other. Life can change in an instant. I came home one night years ago, after two years of marriage, to find my first wife dead on the floor from a drug interaction of two of her medicines. I just turned 70, and my first anniversary with my new wife is tomorrow.

My wife accepts my tech shenanigans and keeps me grounded in reality. Not only an amazing life partner but an invaluable resource as well.

10 years this pas weekend, she loves the automation and actually she likes to brag about it more than I do even if there are hiccups once in a while. Water sensors and temp sensors for outside water pumps have saved us a lot more money than what we spent and all the rest is just fun to play with. She loves the Inovelli switches and dimmers and it's a good thing that they are out of stock once in a while or I would be broke buy now! Then I made the mistake of showing her PixelBlaze and WLED, and she is already planning to install WRGB LED strips all around the house exterior on our next house (in 2 years). Man she's going to cost me a lot of money.

Luckily she did not have to endure X10 stuff back in the day, after those nightmares I took a break and just had local motion switches, remote activated switches and was just waiting for the industry to mature without having to go the commercial route.

Unbelievably lucky is what I would call you. Both for 10 years together, and for a wife who is leading the way to your future automations!!
