My NAS was on an old UPS which depleted too fast to be usefull anymore. So I bought a new UPS. I plug the NAS on it but I did not have time to set it up at that moment. I figured if the power flickers, at least the NAS will be protected. I would take care of the setup later. What could go wrong?
Well, a power outage happened right then. Leaving me with a unconfigured UPS starting to deplete and a NAS for which I had no access to. Annoying but not so bad since often these outage don't last long enough to go through the entire battery charge.
No chance. It lasted well past the complete depletion of the battery. Again, not ideal but EXT4 is pretty good at corruption recovery.
When the power came back the NAS turned on and... nothing. The HDD was not corrupted it was dead.
I spend an entire day rebuilding everything from scratch. (I do have backups in pieces everywhere, so I did not loose anything important. Just time).
Now that it is back online, will I spend the money to get a better NAS with raid capability? Nah... what could go wrong?
