Move device to a different thread network

Bear in mind that the desired end result is not to have any of the thread devices actually appearing on the Google Home dashboard or the Nest displays. So I am hoping I only have to do this for one device and that once the meshes have bonded I can remove from Google Home and only have listed on Apple Home.

These are two different things. For the device:

  1. Factory reset device, remove device from Hubitat
  2. Pair to Apple Home
  3. Generate pairing code in Apple Home and connect with Hubitat
  4. Use device in automations with Hubitat

The device will be connected but not on your Google displays. How well the device works will be based on the distance from your Apple thread boarder router. The further away from the Apple device, the harder to reach and use reliably. This is where creating a shared mesh will help especially if the device is closer to a Google thread boarder router.

Yes my first plan was to simply remove, reset, and commission on Apple. Then I thought maybe there was a way to transfer without having to edit all the rules the devices are already involved with. Anyway thanks for all your help I'll definitely experiment with different variations of the process before deciding on a final plan. I am very new to Apple so it's been a steep curve.

One thing I do with Google Home is have a ZZZ room that contains things I want for voice control, but not really in a true room. This way, it’s at the bottom of both the app and displays. The family is fairly well trained not to mess with that room. Granted, this is a little different than your situation but could be an idea.

I tried that to start with but two reasons it didn't work out. a) I have a grandson who is a terrible prankster (last time he set alarms for the middle of the night) and b) Assistant is useless at hearing what we say. I aim to have the bare minimum of devices accessible - just the lights and plugs in common rooms really. Google already tries to take over too much of my life!

Ah hold on I might have misunderstood something. I have to set up an actual Google Nest Display on Google Home using my iPad, not just an Onvis matter plug that can act as a border router? So I need to remove a Nest Hub Max from Google Home and re-add it using the iPad?

Later: Done that too, I'll wait and see what happens.

Which version of the Nest Display? Only the second version is a boarder router. The Nest Hub Max is a Thread Boarder Router. Give your network a day or two and see if it reconfigures automatically.

I have three Max's, one 2nd generation and two 1st generation, so quite a good basis for a thread network. It's a Max I removed and rejoined on the iPad.

Just so we are on the same page, there is only one version of the Nest Hub Max and that is also a thread boarder router. There are two versions of the smaller Nest Hubs. Only the second version is a thread boarder router. The original one is not.

Either way, I'll be curious to see how this plays out with your home. My Apple TVs ended up joining the Thread Network created by the Google Devices since the Google one was the first established.

Sorry I meant and a two firsts and a second generation non-max ones. So 6 altogether. If they all join the Nest network I hope it doesn't leave me in the same situation that removing from Google Home deletes them from the network. I'll be experimenting just with this handful of devices that are not actually involved in any automations, so if it all goes awry it won't have destroyed anything

No sign of the networks joining yet. Or at least not if the NN names are the definitive sign.

Result of test: I added the plug that had been commissioned via Google Home to the Apple fabric. It was already a device on Hubitat through Google's thread network. I deleted from Google Home and it did not change to using the Apple thread network. Basically it was deleted from all my systems.

So although some people may have found their thread networks cooperated, this is obviously something that has not been rolled out to all, as so many Google features are not.

On the other side, opening the now-unresponsive device on Apple Home, and choosing to delete it, Apple Home offered me the choice of removing from Apple and/or Google. So it's a little one-sided at the moment.
