Motion sensor just draining batteries?

I got a ThirdReality motion sensor 2-pack, and one of them drained through two different sets of batteries in like a week. The battery reported was basically actively reporting a drop, and indeed when dead it stopped responding.

The other remains at 100.

Any idea WHAT or WHY it would be draining? The logs aren't showing that it's actively doing stuff, so I am assuming something hardware related... but I don't quite understand what would actually cause the battery drain?

Any ideas before it unfortunately just might end up in the trash?

I'd get in touch with the supplier and request a replacement. Don't know where you are but under UK law that'd be covered under "not fit for purpose".
Something is definitely wrong when it's going through battery like that and I'm thinking something like a short circuit (ie permanent current draw) and if you break it down to try and deal with the problem (ie open the thing up to check it and possibly compare with the other one) - your guarantee will evaporate like snow in a fresh.
I think you've ended up with a dud. Send it back with a description of the problem.

Those kind of sensors should last for multiple months.

This sounds likely. If you purchased on Amazon, I would start by reaching out to the seller. They may give you several options (partial refund, replace the wonky unit, etc.). If you don't get a satisfactory response, reach out to the manufacturer directly and ask how they recommend resolving.

How far from the hub or a zigbee a repeater is the one at 100% vs the one where the batteries don’t last?

It has been my experience that batteries on devices that have a weaker mesh don’t last as long. For that reason, I have repeaters spread throughout the houser. (Either mains dévies or dedicated repeater depending on location…)

Sorry to be fair they were actually very good and I already have a replacement. But they didn’t want the dud unit back and before I throw it out I thought I’d see if maybe there might be some “easy” way to understand what might actually be going on

But yeah I’m not interested in opening it up and tinkering with things I don’t even understand
A short circuit of some sort causing a constant power draw despite lack of motion triggering signal usage sounds somewhat most accurate!
