Mesh Hub is not accessible on LAN

I have two C8 hubs on the same LAN. Both are at platform version 2.3.9.154. I am running a Mesh WIFI network with 4 eero devices. Both C8 hubs are connected to switches via ethernet cables that are attached to two eero devices.

The way eero routers work is that the main eero router attaches to the cable modem, the satellite eeros go through a switch connected to the main router. In order to connect more than one device to the satellite eeros, switches are connected to each satellite, then any hard-wired devices are attached to the switches. The eero routers do not have multiple ports - one port connects to the ethernet cable coming from the main router, the other port needs a switch if there is more than one device you want to attach to the network.

This is how both the main and mesh C8s are connected to the LAN.

The problem I'm having is that the mesh hub is not accessible most of the time. When it isn't accessible (via its LAN IP address or via the my.hubitat dashboard), the green light on the C8 is still lit. If I disconnect the mesh C8 from power, wait a bit and then reconnect power, the blue light comes on and the hub boots.

I can access the mesh hub at that point, but at some point thereafter the mesh hub becomes unresponsive again (despite the green light being on).

Another oddity is that when I look at the device page on the mesh hub, all of the linked devices show up as offline.

Anyone have any idea of what might be going on?

What are the IP addresses of each eero base station your hubs are connected to? You should be able to see that in the eero app.

The eero’s all have the same prefix. The main hub is connected to .134, the mesh hub to .135

I’m wondering if I should do a full factory reset on the mesh hub and start over. I did a soft reset when I moved the hub from a second home to my primary residence.

Both of my hubs are on the hub protect and remote access subscriptions.

If I deregister the hub, will that cause issues with my subscriptions?

Also, I checked and both hubs are using reserved (ie static) ip addresses at the eero router level.

This morning the mesh hub shows up but once again it is not accessible from the app or a browser. The eero router shows it as not connected in the “Recently Online” list. All other devices on the satellite eero show up and work correctly. I’ve also tried using different ports on my switch that is connected to the satellite eero, to no avail.

I really would like this to work since the mesh hub is in an outbuilding pretty far from the house.

Do a network reset on the mesh hub. Using a toothpick or paperclip press and hold the button on the bottom of the hub for 7-10 seconds (It will be the only round hole out of all the square ones) and make sure you put a reservation in for the hub. Confirm that ip isn't in use by anything else before making the reservation. You can check your dhcp table for this. See how it behaves then.

OK, I checked the IP addresses on my LAN, and there are no duplicate entries. I did the network reset on the mesh C8, and I was able to access it after it rebooted. All of the devices showed offline again. I rebooted both the main hub and the mesh hub. Now the devices show up. Also, the IP addresses show up on the main and mesh hubs. One thing I noticed is that when the mesh hub is not accessible, the IP address for it does not show up on the main hub under the Hub Mesh menu. Reconnecting doesn't work in that case, either.

I just did all this a few minutes ago, and I'll update this post to see if your suggestion fixed the issue or not.

Thank you!

A lot of people have had issues with the eero units. As a network engineer they irk me to no end. I usually just recommend unifi AP's as they are fantastic at extending and handing off. And they have a 1gb backhaul. They're also fairly unobtrusive

I had an Asus mesh network set up and it was a PITA to manage it. The thing I like about the eero mesh network is that is just works, very much plug and play. The only device on the entire LAN I am having issues with is the mesh C8 hub. So at this point, I am reluctant to get rid of my 5 eero devices and start over.

Anyway, I'll see what happens... I might bite the bullet and upgrade to HA and just use the C8's for zwave devices. Time will tell...

Thanks again!

Bummer.... Cannot access the mesh hub again.... Unless anyone has other suggestions, I'll just disconnect it and use the main hub for everything, which is working pretty well. The z-wave mesh reaches my outbuilding because I have an outdoor plug inbetween the house and the outbuilding which I believe acts as a bridge or repeater of some sort.

Thanks for your advice, regardless! The community is terrific, especially for those of use without a lot of technical / IT / networking skills.

This is probably not causing your issue but do your hubs have different names allocated to them on the hub settings page.

I seem to remember people reporting issues because their hub names were identical.
Like I say, probably not the issue but it is something to cross of the troubleshooting list.

Thanks for the suggestion, I also modified the names to be different under Settings / Hub Details a while back. I can see where that might be an issue...

While in general the recommendation here seems to be that you should use DHCP to set the hub's IP address, if that's how you're doing it now, you might want to try using a fixed IP on the mesh hub and see if you get different results.

Just as an update, I couldn’t get the mesh hub working consistently so I sold it and am now using Home Assistant Yellow integrated with the C8 via maker api and everything is running smoothly, even with the eero mesh network…
