paired with Apple Home, working fine. opened to "intermediate" pairing with HE, fails every time.
direct pairing attempts with pairing code on device, fails every time. I think the failure code may change, but failure is always the result.

I paired a couple Matter items recently, and I had to factory reset them to get them to join Hubitat. Have you tried that?
I believe the IKEA Timmerflotte is a Matter over Thread temperature and humidity sensor. Thus, it cannot be directly paired to a Hubitat hub. It needs to first be paired with another system that suspports a Thread Border Router (TBR), and then shared to Hubitat via Matter's Multi-Admin feature.
Ah, that would make sense as to why it is failing. I didn't even think of that direct vs indirect pairing issue.
it is indeed MoT and it is paired and working with Apple Home a TBR; which I now take it the HE is not. the failure you see in the image contains the Apple Home proferred pairing code and not the devices original pairing code.
the device is paired and working happily with Home. it won't pair with the HE through Apple Home. as far as I can see that makes it a HE problem, not a device problem.
something I didn't state on the original ticket was Apple Home Pods are on 26.6.
Update, as assistance is proving light I have under a general investigation moved forward on this. Firstly observations:
So I pulled out an ancient AirPort Extreme sitting in the loft and configured it for 2.4ghz only and connected it to my existing network for this purpose. Once my additions have been completed, the device can be turned off and put back in the loft. Then I managed to complete a pairing. But... What a faff....
I now have a Timmerflotte paired, but only the temperature and the battery..? Why? It's identified it as a 'Generic Matter Temperature/Humidity Sensor', but it only sees 2 end points and not 3. So I tried to pair the Humidity from the sensor and it won't pair again, because... it's paired. So I tried another sensor and that won't pair with this error:

Are you saying your MAC has to be on 2.4 WIFI? My MAC is hardwired ethernet to my router, WIFI turned off. I have no problems pairing a Timmerflotte to HE using the MAC
I didn't try plugging it in, as all I read suggested wifi 'compatibility' was required. That said for future reference and for others facing these issues, it is noted. Perhaps that should be documented better; but the results of the pairing issues remain as documented above.
I don't know enough about this stuff, but when I pair a matter device with Apple Home I use my phone. My phone is on 5g WIFI to my router which has both 2.4g and 5g. I have not had any problems from that standpoint.
I have paired a standard Matter device directly to HE without using Apple Home. When doing that I use my MAC the way it is. Obviously you can't do that with a Thread device, it has to be paired to a TBR first.
It seems to me, in my non-knowledge, of this stuff, as long as everything is on the same network, WIFI, Wired, etc. thru the router it seems to work.
Also having said all that. HE and matter devices used to be kinda iffy. After the last few firmware updates I have not had any issues whatsoever. Thank you HE staff.
EDIT: Somewhere along the line with the lastest updates, you have to enter the WIFI info on the Matter pairing screen in HE. I found that out by accident. See this thread:
Thanks for the input. I'm not really bothered about the layout; that can be tickled at any time. I am bothered about the lack of functionality. I've also just become aware that the attempt to pair the second Timmerflotte has resulted in overriding the settings of the first. The second failed intermediate pairing is now showing as connected to 'Matter Test' when the first 'successful' pairing is not.
As far as the 'wifi' element of this issue is concerned, it is now behind us. Thanks to yourself I now have a couple of alternatives I can use.
Not sure what you mean here. Guess I missed something
I will unpair the item, remove it from Home, reset it and start again.
Hit configure on the device. Then do a refresh on your browser. Give it a few seconds and see if it shows up then.

wired connections and the process not only works, but is really quick.
the first pairing is now showing humidity; but the first pairing is still aligned to the second 'failed' pairing. so instead of the 'kitchen' connected, it's the 'porch'. I'm ok with that, I know which device it is and it's updating regularly on both temperature and humidity. I've added two more devices, 'configuring' each and waiting before adding the next. everything seems ok, with the exception of the first pairing (the kitchen). this one is going to have to be reset and re added to Home as it is unresponsive to further pairing.
