Matter commission

When you first commission a matter device, with either Apple, Google, Alexa, whatever. Do you need to do that while connected to the wifi network where it will be used?

Yes. In my case, I always have to connect my phone to my IOT network to commission a matter device.

@j715 Yes, matter requires wifi as it sets up an ip 6 network. It also needs bluetooth to onboard. (Once the Hubitat app is updated to use bluetooth you can onboard matter devices directly to hubitat). There are two forms of Matter. Matter over wifi, and Matter over thread. Both require wifi.

I was probably not real clear on my question.

If I commission a matter device at say my location on my wifi, and link it to HE. Then take the HE hub and that device to another location which has a different wifi will it still be connected to the HE? Or does the initial commissioning need to be done on the final wifi network it will be used on?

Since the matter device uses WiFi to communicate with the hub, I don’t see how it could connect to a new SSID with different login credentials after you move it to a new location.

I don’t have any matter devices though, so can’t actually speak from experience.

IPv6 is the key for the features for Matter, too many times I have seen the "Experts" in home network setup tell people to disable IPv6 in both their computers and routers. This has to stop. If you want to break discovery of devices this is a sure way of doing it.

Also what really needs to be fixed is that the ISP's need to address their lack of consistency of delivery of IPv6 addresses delegated to the home network so SLAAC works properly. Yes IPv6 will self-configure mostly with "local" addresses but long term all the pieces of IPv6 should be in place and working in harmony.
