Massive google outage turned (some not so) smart homes into zombies

The joys of local control!

Most definitely!

However, my outage experience wasn't inoperable. I could still use my Nest thermostat but I had to do the old fashion way of turning the dial. My Nest Hello doorbell still worked but acted funny. It would consistently announce "Someone's at the door" with no one there. I disconnected it temporarily from Google Assistant and when visitors rang the doorbell, the chime still sounded.

I wonder about how the smoke/CO detectors handled the outage cause that could be dangerous. I can't imagine them NOT working just acting like a dumb alarm instead? Anyway, I think this is why Google is trying to push into the local control market with their new Google Home Max Hub (or whatever it is called).

I was on the fence about buying a Nest camera but now not wanting to.

All connected smoke/CO detectors that meet safety lab certifications like UL have to operate locally regardless of what’s going on with the “smart” component of the device.
