Admittedly putting the carriage before the horse here, as I do not have my habitat yet, but I was looking here Maker API | Hubitat Documentation and couldn't help but notice all the URL's use my hubs IP address, which to my (admittedly limited) knowledge means that the hub cannot be accessed off of LAN doing that.
I am planning on setting up a presence detector using those URL's, but that won't work given I will not be on LAN when I cross my geofence set up. Is there any way I can expose those to the outside world? (planning to use Locative for geofencing, could consider OwnTracks if Locative doesn't work. Won't use Life360)
I guess I should stop looking at the documentation and assuming it does one thing before my hub actually arrives - I am just so excited for it and planning all my automations already. Thank you for your help!
I can't remember if Maker API was once LAN-only, but it's possible, and the docs could do a better of job explaining that cloud endpoints are also available to eliminate this confusion. I've made a small update so this should at least no longer look like the only option. Thanks for noting this, and good luck with your new hub!
It is totally my fault for assuming something couldn't be done before my hub even arrives, but thank you anyway! It hasn't even arrived yet and I can already tell I made the right choice
You're going to love maker API. There are many 3rd party dashboard apps that rely on it and work very well. It can also be used as a sort of bridge with home assistant.
Out of curiosity, I see you joined the community almost a year ago, but just now getting your hub delivered?
I guess we checked out okay enough, to purchase a hub.
Seriously tho, I believe you'll not find a more responsive, helpful place on the web. People here are kind and generally very knowledgeable.
I stalked the community in guest mode for well over a year before joining and buying a hub - wanted to understand the dynamic as well as the issues and capbilities before subjecting myself to yβall.
I was planning on getting it a year ago, but I ran into a few issues: Firstly, I was using Lutron, with the standard bridge, and the bridge PRO was prohibitively expensive in Canada for me at the time. Secondly, I was using HomeKit as my main interface, and that wasn't changing, so I would also need to set up home bridge/hoobs. Decided it was too much effort.
Fast forward to today - I have switched from Lutron to Hue for various reasons, AND Hubitat now has HomeKit integration natively. That was enough to make me re-consider and, in the end, purchase it.
Interesting. Prepare to be amazed, but if you've been around here for a year, I'm sure you've seen the many incredible things being done here. Even my wife sometimes looks at me and says "you can do that?". Makes me feel like the wizard of oz, minus the curtain...
