Mag locks?

Is anyone using them? They seem to be a very cost effective choice.

+1 for some more details. Don’t know what OP is referring to. A specific brand? Electromagnetic locks in general? What kind of door?

I use them on my driveway gate. Controlled with a Peanut Plug and a wall wart transformer. Works fairly flawlessly (most of the time LOL!). I have webCore pistons that unlock the gate when someone arrives at home and lock it back 5 minutes later.

I'm giving them serious thought for our front and back doors. Seems to me that it would be a good solution to avoiding hassles of a regular smart lock on doors that need a little wiggle to lock sometimes.

You still haven’t clarified what this thread is about. Are we talking about electromagnetic locks?

Yes. The type with the plate and block

I would say it is easier to fix the door/jam so the door closes right than it is to rig up (and run power to) a mag lock.

How will you keep your front and back doors locked if your power goes out?

There are also fail-secure mag locks. Where a physical obstructions falls into place when the power is out. But such fail-secure locks raise the issue of - what happens if the power fails and you're in the house and need to evacuate.

I believe a lock like that would be illegal to put on a residential dwelling egress door where I live, for that exact reason.

I agree with @JasonJoel, adjusting the door and/or frame sounds like less of a hassle anyway.

I have a gate setup that would really lend itself to the cleaner install that a Mag Lock would allow.

But I really worry that these are best suited to locations proximal to mains power and "just out the window" oversight. I guess you could route wiring in a manner that it wouldn't easily be cut...but I'm skeptical.

Do you worry about this at all?

Not at all, I have the low voltage wire inside a run of Metal EMT so cutting it would be difficult (but not impossible) . I would be alerted and see anyone trying to circumvent via my cameras. If and when I get an alert then I can release the dogs via another maglock and they will dispatch the intruder in timely fashion.
