Lutron without the Pro?

I originally ordered Lutron lights over a year ago and didn't get the smart pro bridge. Now I'm getting into trying to automate and realize I need it now.

  1. is there any way to automate without the Pro bridge?
  2. best place to get the pro bridge? Cheapest? Used?
  3. is there anywhere that will let me trade in my regular hub for the money off the pro?

  1. There isn't an official way to use the Lutron devices without (at least) the Pro Bridge, but you can always use them through a platform that does support the "regular" Bridge and integrate them into Hubitat through that. For example, SmartThings has a cloud-based integration, and there are at least two ways to get ST devices into Hubitat. Home Assistant also has a component that works with the "regular" Bridge, but I'm not sure if needs the cloud or if they reverse-engineered a local solution. Here, MQTT would probably be the best way to integrate them. Any method that depends on the cloud is going to be slower than Hubitat's local Pro Bridge integration and is likely to make you like them far less than the people who keep boasting about the merits of Lutron on Hubitat.

  2. Energy Avenue used to have the Pro Bridge new for just over $88. Now it's a bit over $97. That's still pretty cheap, but you might be able to find it elsewhere for a bit less (and probably even less gently used, maybe even new, on eBay).

  3. Not that I'm aware of, though selling your non-Pro Bridge on eBay after the fact would probably net you more than such a trade-in would, anyway. :slight_smile:

I was able to sell my non-pro bridge on ebay for $45. So, it's definitely worth a shot.

Hope I get that lucky

@jsc

I did. Got a used Caseta Bridge Pro (L-BDGPRO2-WH) for $75 (including shipping) on eBay. Sold my non-pro bridge for $45 (including shipping).

I saw a used pro bridge for $75 today morning on eBay.

If I buy the pro, is there any benefit to keeping the non-pro hub? I guess if I go over 75 switches? But then 76 and up won't be connected to Hubitat...

Exactly, if you go over 75 dimmers, switches, Pico remotes and lamp modules (they all count toward the 75 device limit, and the hub itself is a device), the 76th can only be on Hubitat if you get another Pro hub.

I must've gotten a great deal on a switch w/ pro bridge from Lutrons Amazon (think I paid 130?) Seems as though their price went up since I bought it last month. I also have a regular bridge from another bundle I need to figure out what to do with.

Sell it on eBay if you're sticking with Hubitat.

My pro hub should be coming this week. Any issues with moving the switches to the Pro from the original hub? Is there a special process for disconnecting and reconnecting or just repeat the inital pairing process to the Pro Hub?

I moved them sequentially. Removed each switch/dimmer from the old hub. Then added it to the pro bridge. If there was a Pico that controlled a set of switches, I moved that Pico over right after that set of switches/dimmers was moved.

Do the pro and non-pro have the same cords? Power and Ethernet cables?

May have found a pro without cords and want to be sure mine will work

@jsc

Yes. Power adaptor and ethernet cords are the same. Just make sure that you get the model number L-BDGPRO2-WH, and not L-BDGPRO-WH.

Got the pro hub. But now I can't get any of my switches to connect to the new hub? I deleted and reset everything I could but no luck.

I get the LED on the switch to flicker quickly after holding the off button for 10 seconds but nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Well, I moved mine sequentially (one at a time) without any issues. I would recommend factory resetting each caseta dimmer/switch. I forget how to factory reset the switches, but for the dimmers, do this:

Rapidly tap the top β€œon” button three times and on the third tap hold until the lights connected to the switch begin to dim up and down, immediately tap the top β€œon” button three times rapidly. The connected lights will then alternate dim and bright slowly.

Now try pairing the reset switch to the new Pro hub.

Edit: here's how the switches are factory reset -

Press the "on" button 3 times, holding on the third press until the unit begins to blink. Then release and press on the "on" button 3 more times.

This is exactly how I transitioned over to the pro hub.

Go into the non-pro caseta account and delete all your devices. This will reset all your switches.

That's what I did. Just make sure you do it before you delete the old hub from your account. Otherwise you have to readd the old hub to your account and then delete them.

Thanks wish I saw this before.

In the end I kept resetting both the hub and the switches and after about 4-5 times they finally paired.

Now have to figure out how to integrate them into Hubitat

Thanks. I did this over and over. Took about 4-5 tries before it actually paired.
Now need to figure out how to get them into Hubitat
