Lutron Telnet?

HomeKit can talk directly to Lutron's hub. That is how I deal with HomeKit for most of my professional installations. If I have some Zigbee/Z-wave switches I now use Hubitat and its HomeKit bridge. It works great.

I think Hubitat is my present day Matter. It does a great job running all the protocols on one platform.

The problem is that you are trying to combine closed ecosystems with open ones. Apple closed. Lutron closed unless you pay for the privilege.
I will not support apple gear. Never, ever. Its overpriced and underperforming. It's a closed system and woe betide you if you need to sort a problem with Apple gear that they don't see as a problem (the "kiddies iPhones happily spaffing out porn to said kiddies" problem from a few years ago is a famous example). If Apple does not want to fix the problem or doesn't see it as a problem - get stuffed. The same issue with android would be patched in days or there'd be a work around apk you could install and it'd solve the issue.

Then there's the mac computers that used to be made of razor wire..

And years back the dumbification of smartphone OS - because Apple. In 2006 I had a phone that'd connect to a projector, dual core, keyboard good enough to write two books on. Yes, Symbian slightly complex to learn - but that's the cost of a powerful system. It's harder to learn to drive (sic) a Morris Minor than it is a Osprey transport.. And it's a harder job to build a Fiat twin cam Minor conversion than it is to buy a normal one, but it has better functionality.

If you want a powerful HA system then whatever you use you'll have to put in the time and effort to use it properly, assuming of course you're capable. There are 20% of people on this planet (referred to in America as Macnamaras Morons) that are too thick to learn to throw a ball (or grenade) - and let's not mention the "friend or foe" challenge...

Hubitat is complicated. I spent my working life in IT, I can program, I can install and physically build computers, I used to flash smartphones until the dribbling phone virus idiots caused everything to be locked up tighter than a ducks butt.. And Hubitat is still complicated to me. I don't even know half of 5% of what it can do and pretty much everything I need is covered in that...

And to be blunt. If you need zigbee gear and you have WiFi then you sell the WiFi and get the zigbee. In my case I need something that'll work without the Internet, Hubitat will do that. Every single place you look on YouTube the advice is cheap devices, but the most expensive hub, because if you need to upgrade in the future....

None of this is Hubitats fault. Cr-apple are about as likely to cooperate with others as a rabid raccoon, they've been like that since Steve Jobs' balls dropped, it's not as if it's a new policy. You bought the monkey model Lutron Hub... That's on you. I bought WiFi gear on Smartlife because I did it from scratch on my own, didn't even know zigbee or z-wave existed (I'd vaguely heard of x10) . I made exactly the same kind of mistake. But I bit the bullet and bought the zigbee kit I needed..

I'd keep the Hubitat if I were you, because I suspect with all the changes coming up, talking between different ecosystems is going to get a lot easier..

But don't buy in to closed ecosystems and expect them to cooperate well with others. The results will vary between "I don't wanna, unless you pay me" (Lutron) to psychotic-autistic (Apple). It'll never happen. Honest politicians are more likely than Apple playing fair with other companies..

Bravo! :+1: I wish I could give that more than 1 heart.

I know purchasing the pro hub is not something you want to do, but you can look at the other side of the coin: A Lutron lighting system is standard in premier smart homes. When these systems are professionally installed it can often cost in the tens of thousands of dollars. I love how hubitat allows my to save tens of thousands of dollars by simply purchasing a lutron pro hub that costs 150 bucks.

Hoping this fact will cheer you up.

This thread was by a person coming from an Apple Home environment who didn’t fully understand the use case and limitations of the Hubitat HomeKit integration. That person has apparently moved on from Hubitat. Probably time to close the thread. @bobbyD
