Lutron Pico button pushes often missing

I have had my Lutron Caseta switches and picos successfully integrated with HE for a year and a half. I never noticed any issues with missed button pushes on picos--the system always responded exactly as expected. However, in recent weeks (recent updates?) I have found that many of my button presses on Pico remotes do not register on the hubitat. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I can see on the logs that it frequently takes multiple presses before one button press appears. Likewise, on a hold, sometimes the "released" is received but not the original hold of the same button. For example:

**[OBVIOUS IT MISSED THE HOLD HERE...]**

It's very frustrating and rendering controls in many rooms unusable.

Any advice?

You're asking if it's commonplace and my answer has to be, It's not something I've seen.

I haven't seen this, nor have I heard of anyone on this forum having this issue in the past few weeks.

Maybe a few preliminary checks might help.

  • For example, does your hub, and the Lutron Bridge have an address reservation in your router?
  • When this is malfunctioning, is the IP address in the Hubitat Lutron Integration the same as when you log into the Lutron app, and check the IP address?

Also, can you tell us if you are using Pico or Fast Pico driver (device Type).

Does it make any difference whether you set this "Delay" setting differently? If I remember correctly, the Lutron hub waits until that Pico times out before accepting more button presses.

Both the bridge and the hub have reserved addresses on the router, and the ip in the integration matches, yes. The setup has been working for a year and a half and the only thing that has changed is software updates on the hub.

I am using the normal Pico driver. I don't think the delay is the issue, as even the first button press is often missed and it makes no difference if I wait 2 seconds or 10 seconds between presses. It also doesn't only happen on holds. However, I will try a shorter delay.

All Picos or specific ones? I ask because I had a similar issue a few years ago with Picos in our master bedroom. They worked well for a while and then I started having random issues. This bedroom is at the far corner of our house so I brought them closer to the hub and they worked. I ended up adding a repeater, plug-in dimmer was only option back then, and it solved the issue.

Thank you. While it happens all over the house, it is true that I haven't noticed it in the rooms immediately next to the hub. The point you are making occurred to me but I thought it was unlikely since they'd been working fine for a long time, and all should be well within range. But given your experience, I maygive a repeater a try. Thank you.

I don't think that Hubitat has changed anything with Lutron in a very long time, and like I said above I haven't seen reports of anything similar on here.

So I am guessing it must be something isolated with your situation. Is it possible your Lutron Bridge is having issues for some reason? Could it possibly be blocked by something where it can't receive? You haven't done any changes to the location of the hubs, ethernet cables, routers, router firmware, or anything like that?

On a related note, are you using a mesh system, or is the Bridge wired into the same physical switch/router as the Hubitat?

Try changing batteries in the Pico. Seriously. I've had weird things happen when the battery voltage starts dropping.

The Lutron bridge is wired to the same switch as the Hubitat and there is no hub mesh involved. Thanks all for the advice. I will try the batteries before the repeater because it's a lot cheaper.

Maybe try changing to the Lutron legacy drivers? The behavior changed slightly in the new ones. It messed me up for a bit back in September.

For sure.

But just so you know, the first Caséta lamp dimmer paired to the Caséta Smart Hub Pro can act as a repeater. You don't have to purchase a dedicated Caséta repeater, which is much more expensive than a lamp dimmer.

No worries. I even changed batteries etc and it didn’t solve it. Forgot to mention I called Lutron support too and they suggested the repeater which I installed in a hallway leading to my master bedroom. This is what solved the issue.

Something else to consider is placement of the Lutron hub. Is it near anything metal like a HVAC return or fridge? If yes move it away. Maybe change the orientation to see if it helps. I have mine under my front stair case and it’s velcro’ed to the wall above a HVAC return. It fell off once and was beside the HVAC return and that caused issues. I also tried different orientations too, horizontal on top of something vs vertical against the wall. Vertically has worked for me with repeater but YMMV. I have the Lutron hub and my 4 HE hubs mounted on the wall.

Home Depot sells the lamp dimmers that @aaiyar suggested. You can always buy one and try it to see if it solves the issue and if not return it.
