Lutron Dimmers/Switches and the Swap Apps Device menu

I have a new lutron dimmer that I would like to swap for a remote switch. The remote switch shows in the swap apps device (old) list but the lutron dimmer does not show in the (new) list. It's used in quite a few rules and I was hoping for an easy swap over. Is this not possible? Is it a lutron thing? Is there a way to make it work?

"Child devices" are not supported by Swap Apps Device, with that being an intentional decision because usually the parent app or driver has a very specific relationship with the child device that might break if it's swapped. In the case of Lutron devices, they are child devices of the Lutron integrator app, so they are not supported for this feature. (BTW, you can't really see parent-child relationships in this list when the parent is an app instead of a device, but usually when an app is responsible for creating a device, that app is the parent app, and the same rules apply as parent/child devices. Incidentally, Lutron devices actually strike me as something that should be pretty easy to make work with this feature if they ever change course, since I don't think the app really cares that much about the devices it makes once they're created, but that's the way it is for now due to this general concern.)

If they were both Lutron devices, you could "cheat" and swap their DNIs/IDs (and drivers if needed), but since yours is a totally different kind of device, it looks like you'll have to do it the "old fashioned" way.

This isn't really true. I got myself into a heap of trouble thinking I could swap two Lutron devices with Swap App Devices during development. Not only did it not work, it was crazy recovering from it, and I had to remove both devices (ripping them out of apps) and replace them anew. I didn't waste time trying to understand what had happened, and we already knew that child devices in general weren't going to work. So, no child devices for this tool. With Lutron, the parent thinks one thing about the child, while the child has changed identity. Not good.

This tool is doing replacement surgery at a very deep level of how the database tracks devices. It works as expected for normal devices. But, one still has to be careful and thoughtful. As in, use with care...
