Lutron Caseta Issue

After many years, and conversion from Wink to Smartthings to Hubitat, I finally have an issue with one of my dimmer switches. It doesn't matter how I activate it, be it from Lutron app, Hubitat automation, Hubitat device page, from the switch, or from a Pico (which also runs a Hubitat automation. Here is the issue. Turn on switch. All three lamps on circuit turn on normal. Power off, then back on, and they all flash at 1 second intervals in unison. Power off, wait some period of time (a couple of minutes or so) and turn back on. Lights come on normal. This is reproducible. The really weird thing is if I activate another Pico in the same area, and these lamps have just been turned off, they will start flashing. This other Pico has nothing to do with this dimmer. Not in the Lutron app or Hubitat. Is my dimmer going bad? Is my house haunted?

  1. Factory-reset the dimmer.
  2. Does it now work as expected?
  3. If it does not, the dimmer is going bad.

As for the Pico issue, it could also reflect the dimmer going bad. In fact, if it wasn't for the Pico issue, I'd be more inclined to believe that one or more of your lamps are going bad.

Just tried the reset - same issue. Removed each lamp separately, same issue. Looks like a bad switch. Thanks for the info. New switch already in cart for purchase.

Wow... Outside of an electrical short, I've never seen one go bad before...

You might want to email Lutron support. I've had them replace stuff for free well past warranty periods. Might be worth asking.

Edit: probably better to go through the support process of diagnosing the problem with them and have them conclude that the switch is bad and see if they offer to replace it rather than just asking for a replacement straight away.

I use Ra2, but I've had them replace a very large honeycomb shade, VCRX, and a couple of dimmers over the years - all of which were out of warranty.

For anyone interested, it wasn't the dimmer. Before I contacted Lutron, I started noticing other weirdness with other Lutron dimmers, some turning on in Lutron App but not in Hubitat. Some turning on in Hubitat but not showing so in Home app. Anyway, I decided to reboot Lutron hub, and all issues went away (after rebuilding one Room App in Hubitat. Oh, and the other Pico activating the lamps was due to a misconfiguration that I did.

People talk about the upfront cost of the Casetas, but I have 9 dimmers with 1 -3 picos on each that have been flawless for over 5 years. Meanwhile, I've lost count of the number of GE/Jasco/Honeywell Z-Wave on/off paddle switches that have died on me over the years.

Now that there are on/off Casetas with picos for 3-ways I am shifting toward those and reinforcing the Z-wave mesh in other ways.

No kidding. I should swap all my switches back to Z-wave so I have something to do. They are too damn reliable even the picos in my cars with temp range from -15 to +40c.

I don't think the Picos actually need replacement batteries, as they seem to last forever. Well, at least 9 years on some of mine.

My dimmer that failed was due to a bad LED driver in a lamp. The dimmer was unresponsive and Lutron replaced it - the brand new one failed instantly. Replaced the bulb and all was well again. Lutron was kind enough to replace the dimmer the second time even though it was definitely not their problem. They were super helpful and I highly recommend them even if they are a fortune.

The only thing I really do hate in the RadioRa2 world is the dealer model. I wish I could order shades on my own and that the dimmers weren't crazy expensive. Thankfully, the previous owners of my house paid 90% of the cost when they installed it all and I've just had minor additions.

My grumpiness probably has to do with the fact that "my" [previous owners'] dealer just tried to sell me SnapAV stuff every time I called them.

On/off switches have been around since the beginning. Do you mean the Diva style switches? That said, with the exception of my hallway and a storage closet I just keep everything using dimmers. Makes life a lot easier..(and more adjustable)

Around 12 for a few of mine..

I'm surprised the batteries can last that long unused in the package.
