Looking for Solution: control switch when AppleTV turns on/off

C-8 Hub.

I am looking for ideas on how to accomplish what I’m looking to do. It’s a long, drawn-out affair, but basically, I have a projector, screen, and appletv. I have the screen plugged into a z-wave switch. When i turn on the switch, the screen goes down. When I turn off the switch, the screen goes up.

So, I want to create a rule/automation/whatever that says, “When appletv turn on, turn on screen switch; when Appletv turns off, turn off screen switch.”

The issue is I can’t see the AppleTV within Hubitat, and Apple Home doesn’t allow me to create an automation based on the power status of the AppleTV (at least that I can figure out).

So, I’d love any thoughts on how I can accomplish this. Thanks!

Have you looked at the HomeKit Integration? I think it might work for what you are trying to do

I think that the only way to accomplish this is to setup Home Assistant and share a switch from Hubitat which Home Assistant can turn off and on depending on the state of the ATV.

Does your projector turn on when the Apple TV turns on? AppleTv does not expose its controls unless you utilize HomeBridge or Home Assistant. However, if your projector turns on when the Apple TV turns on, you could use a power monitoring plug for the projector and write an automation based on the changes.

@JB10 it does. I think this could work… Any suggestions on a power monitoring plug? Or just a plug that has that capability?

You already have a working Zwave switch in that room, so I would just look for a Zwave plug that also has power monitoring. Zooz or Shelly would probably work fine for this, but I do not have any strong suggestions.

This is the integration that brings ATV and pods into hubitat.

It wont give you power status, but it will give you playing, paused, and idle

This was totally it. I tried the energy monitoring outlet on the appletv, but the power usage was way too small to work - sleep versus on was very little change.

But, the system is already setup so that the projector turns on from sleep when the appletv turns on. That power difference was huge. So, I setup smart outlets on BOTH the projector and the screen, then just set up a simple automation to open and close the screen. Works like a charm.

I wanted to do something similar but I keep my ATV on. In my case I’ve a NAS that’s sole use is media storage for infuse. As I’m using a Harmony remote, I used the status of it’s ’Watch Apple TV’ to send a Wake on LAN packet to the NAS when the activity starts and a shutdown when I switch to another activity or turn off the media.
