Oh, right a Virtual Sensor and a real sensor is the same as far as GH is concerned. I'll look into custom commands for future reference.

You could create a virtual sensor that also has switch capabilities but then it would only be the switch part that reports to GH anyway so why bother?

It will do this from a thermostat right now, just not a separate temp sensor.
