Looking for a solid zwave gang switch

hub - C8 pro
i'm located in australia and looking for a gang switch that does the following:

  • momentary switch or touch panel. Either is fine.
  • has to be zwave for reliability. Zigbee is 2.4ghz, can have interference with home wifi etc.
  • has to support integration with hubitat and home assistant.
  • 1-4 gang switches
  • certified for australia and has all 3 wires - earth, active, neutral.

According to the certifications, these are all of your options. From the brand names… they should all be solid. Though someone from AUS would be a better judge than I.

This solution unfortunately, doesn’t exist.

What I’ve done is use Clipsal Iconic wall plates, with momentary switches, and Aeotec single or dual nano zwave modules (multiple in some cases) behind them.

This option does give you more flexibility as you can mix and match dimmer and relay modules as required.

Eg

The modules are quite small, so you can stuff multiple into a wall cavity.

yea i got something similar at my dads house.

clipsal saturn

with aeotec nano behind just like you did.

problem is that clipsal saturns are really crap. Very poor build quality. Physical switches stop working after a while.

from your picture they look like flip switches? or do they flip down and then back up again?
how's the durability on those?

there are other momentary switches like these Clipsal Push Button Switch Mechanism with Blue Indicator 30PBL - Stylish and High-Quality | AGM Electrical
Not sure how durable they are.

what about this one?

australian zwave, touch with haptic feedback, fits into australian back plate, integrates with home assistant and hubitat, and certified for australia with all neutral, active, and earth wires.

Plus it's something i can easily do as well. Just put in whatever wires from the old wall plate into new wall plate. Going the aeotec dongle route, I'd have to get my dad (electrician) to do the job.

Have you had specific issues in the past with zigbee not performing reliably due to wifi interference? If you choose the correct channels on both with a strong mesh zigbee can be just as reliable as any protocol. Just asking because you may have more choices on the zigbee side.

Yep, they are rocker switches spring back to the “off” position.

The iconic are much more durable than Saturn. And if bits break, you can just replace the rocker cover without replacing the entire wall plate.

Good question. No I have not tried zigbee devices much. Just heard that it "can" get microwave and wifi interferences.

But yea if you can recommend me a solid zigbee wall switch, would be great.

hmm good point. Need to buy dad beer to get him to wire it all in. :upside_down_face:

I'm sorry, but I don't use any switches so I am unable to recommend a specific zigbee switch. Hopefully, someone else in the community could.

As for interference though I have never experienced microwave interference and my hub is approximately 15 feet from my microwave.

The best thing to avoid wifi interference is to make sure you have your wifi and zigbee on the correct channels and settings. You will want to make sure you select a wifi and zigbee channel that doesn't step on each other.

For example. Wifi is best to stay on channel 1, 6, or 11. I believe Australia has up to channel 13 don't you but it is best to stick with one of those three or a combination of them. Also keep your wifi channel width set to 20mhz and set your router to stay on the wifi channel and not do any kind of automatic switching of channels.

Then your zigbee channel can be 15, 20, or 25. These fall in the gaps between those wifi channels so they don't step on each other. If Australia allows the use of 26 you could use it too. Some people experience issues with a C8 Pro on channel 20 but I do not.

I hope that makes sense.

Just for reference I have three access points. One in my home, one on my carport, and one in my buildings. Home is channel 11, carport is channel 6 and the building is channel 1. In my home I have three different zigbee mesh. One Hubitat, one Home Assistant, and one Aqara hub. Hubitat is channel 20, Aqara is channel 15. Home Assistant is channel 11 actually. Yes that one steps on my building of channel 1 but the physical distance is enough that the building wifi signal in my home isn't great so I think that is why they play well with each other. I have zero interference issue with any of them.

thanks for all that help. Makes sense.

i tried these zwave wall panels. They work great!

good thing is that it directly fits into australian standard backplate. So just take old out one and put this one in. Took me 5 mins. Easy pair with hubitat C8 Pro as well.

Do not buy mains powered equipment from China via Aliexpress, it will not meet Australian electrical standards, or be certified for use here, and it will be a fire risk.

good point. thanks for that.

this one should be fine right? complies with AU standards?

I do not know personally of anyone that has and as stated I would not recommend buying mains powered devices from AliExpress. Make sure wherever you buy them they are certified for your area.

No worries.

If they are lying about being Aus certified, they’ll get themselves into Lot of trouble, so you should be safe. :+1:

since you also live in australia. What zigbee/zwave switch panel you use for your house?

I don’t, I use Aeotec and Shelly zwave modules behind Clipsal Iconic wall plates and using momentary switch mechs. Eg

wouldn't that end up very expensive? aeotec dongle per switch plus clipsal panel plus momentary toggles.

Yeah it wasn’t a cheap solution, but there weren’t any good options for all in one solutions at the time, that also passed the WAF test.
