My wife seems to make up a new device name every time she has to do a voice command. Then gets peeved when I didn't name it that.

After one too many accidents with Alexa hearing "All Lights" instead of "All Blinds" (I refuse to call mine "shades," even though it would be less likely to get confused, because they are not...), I ended up making an "All Lights" group in Alexa just so nothing harmful would happen if she accidentally hears that instead. I can't remember if I even put anything useful inside it--just wanted to avoid things like my lighting automation "kill switches," mode switches, and whatnot. I rarely use it, anyway, and most of my lights are Hue so I can just use "All Hue Lights," which I've never hard interpreted incorrectly.

I'm not sure if that would help with your problem (because I'm not sure what device/group Alexa really used at the end of that conversation), but it just reminded me of why I did this and how annoying it was before...ha.

Another thing you can do is to set critical things that are not actual lights to switches in the Alexa App, so that way they won't be turned on or off by voice. Your Water valve and TVs are candidates for this. Grouping lights into rooms and linking Alexa devices to those rooms also helps so that turning off lights doesn't lead to a question prompt and instead just turns off the lights in that room. For this to work you have to have an Echo device in every room with lights but at $20 bucks each for an Echo dot it is probably a good investment.

I only have switches . So not really sure what alexa did. Certainly no routines to close water valve.

In homebridge I have a room called “isolated” and I put things in that room that in don’t want turned off with a “turn off the lights” command from a Siri in the same room as I’m speaking or the wife is speaking. For instance, on my nightstand we have a salt lamp that is only on during certain hours at night. That is isolated so when we ask Siri to turn off the lights that lamp remains on to provide a nightlight in the room.

I had my mom visiting and she did the opposite - she went downstairs at 4am and decided to ask Alexa to turn ON the lights. Sigh.

I have my rules set up so that overnight, lights will only come on at 25% brightness instead of full levels.

Same for mine that come.on with motion but i do have a turn all lights on voice rule that i want 100% in case of break in.

Same...mine comes up w/such odd wordings that I feel like she must be playing with me. Most recent was "Hey Google, turn on the lights over the island" instead of the utterly simple "...turn on the island lights." She's never in her life told me to "...turn on the lights over the island," or "...turn on the lights over the dining room table," so why does she say it that way to Google!? Just bizarre...

And then blame you and your automations when it doesn't work.

BTW, for those of us who would prefer to communicate with just grunts & nods, my echoes don't require "turn on the" phrase; just 'island lights' will do for on. 'Off' is still required, so 'island lights off' works. Too bad they didn't set it up to just toggle.

Did you make any changes in the Alexa app?

When I say "Alexa, desk light" I get "Hmm, I dont know that" as a response.

there are two alexa apps you can be using an older that only sets everything as a switch or newer one.

I only have the option for one Alexa app via the Google Play store.

not on the phone.. on hubitat there is an older alexa integration called
amazon echo app which i use i think now deprecated, and a newer one.. that my be depending on which you use why certain commands work differently.

This older one only exposes switches which is all i use anyway..

I'm using the newer Amazon Echo Skill on the Hubitat side.
