Light bulbs with Hubitat hub

I've had nothing but trouble with simple smart light bulbs and hubitat hub.
This is on my dads hub.... I tried 2 different smartthings bulbs and it would not work reliably. (ie. would not always respond to on and off) I just bought a OSRAM Lightify A19 bulb. It was working I thought but when using the devices menu I tried to turn it off and on, it would generally respond but regardless of what the bulb did the screen said off. Note the bulb is in the kitchen and the hub is in the bedroom not far away.
I then tried the flash option and then I could not STOP the flashing with off or on. I had to unplug the bulb and now I can't turn on or off.... I've tried to reset it with 5 x (off then 3 sec on) . This is very frustrating as this should be very simple. I feel like the hub signal strength is deficient but its unclear how to see any signal strength between devices....(like wifi). Any help would be appreciated.

I'll give it a shot and hopefully others will chime in as well.

First, many of us have offloaded our smart bulbs to Hue hubs using the excellent Hue integration. Lots of reasons for this, but many bulbs try to act as repeaters. That works fine on a ZLL-only network but on a ZHA network it does not fair so well and can cause problems with other devices that try to route through ZLL bulbs. The Hue hub can be used with a number of non-Hue bulbs, but I'm not sure if Osram is among them.

Second, despite what I just said, you should be able to get this sucker to pair and work OK. What driver are you using?

Third, there are some tools to help you manage your zigbee network and there is a way to tell relative signal strength. If you use this link, but insert your hub's IP address instead of mine,
http://192.168.1.11/hub/zigbee/getChildAndRouteInfo it will show you something that looks like this...

The first set of devices are those that talk directly to the hub and not through a repeater. The LQI, or Link Quality Index (Indication?), measures the quality of the link. There's no absolute "it won't work below X" but I like to see them around 250. My screen shot shows one device well below that and the device works fine, but it is still an indication of a signal strength issue.

These are the most unreliable bulbs that I’ve had the misfortune of using. I had over 50 of the RGBW version at one time. They didn’t work reliably on SmartThings either. They were all replaced under the two year warranty with the newer Ledvance version (different zigbee chip) because they would overheat and either stop responding to commands, or burn out/short the LEDs so that the maximum brightness appeared to be around 1%. Around half of the Ledvance bulbs were also replaced under warranty for the same reason. All of them were in open fixtures btw.

Well... that's not promising! Are they now sold under the Sylvania name?

thanks all for the excellent info,,,,, so i would have to buy a hue hub and a hue bulb? that would be ok if i had a bunch but only needing one makes that expensive....is there reliable zigbee bulbs or wifi bulbs that work better....im guessing they are cheap. Thanks for the info on signal strength i will look at that.

People seem to like the Sengled bulbs and they do not try to repeat so they are mesh-friendly. Stick with zigbee - wifi integration is always messier. I'd suggest getting one and seeing if you can pair that. If not we'll need to help you look further.

Yes. If they say “Osram” on the bulb, they are the old model that is known to have an unreliable zigbee chip. If they say “Sylvania”, or “Ledvance”, then the Zigbee part is probably okay, but in my experience the A-19 bulbs still overheat. I haven’t had any problems with the recessed rt5/6 lights. A good A-19 bulb would be Sengled. I haven’t heard of people having issues with them.
The Ledvance bulbs do need the firmware updated to work reliably.

What driver are you using? I've got an Osram color bulb with the Advanced Zigbee RGBW Bulb driver and it works perfectly even if the colors are a bit off

advanced zigbee bulb ....is that what i should be using?

for giggles I would try the generic zigbee bulb as well... just make sure it hit "configure" after changing the driver.

Advanced Zigbee Bulb would be my guess - I only have the color
