I use a motion sensor combined with a contact sensor to let me know when there is new mail in the mailbox. It works great
The motion sensor is detecting any incoming mail and the contact sensor on the door is canceling the notification when I check the box myself while sending a message that the mailbox is getting checked. This because our mailbox has an small opening for the incoming mail in the street and a door for checking and picking up the mail inside the frontyard so it was not possible to use only a contact door sensor as in US.
