Lesson Learned in a Bad Z-Wave Switch

I had a strange problem for close to year where occasionally (once a week or so) not all devices would turn off. It didn't matter which rule or which devices were being turned off, but it had to be a rule where at least 5 devices were being turned off.

One night it happened again but this time the Z-Wave switch that stayed on was a wall dimmer in the bedroom. I also have a button controller on the night stand that would turn this light off. It didn't work, it would not respond to turning off from the switch, but it did turn off if I pressed the paddle. Through all of this the logs were clean and showed the switch being being turned off both 'digital' and 'physical' yet the light remained ON.

The next day I replaced the switch (though it was working fine again). It's been a month and I no longer see this or any other problem.

The lesson I learned is its not just ghosts or log entries that signify a problem.

I'm definitely no Z-Wave expert, but I would suggest turning on logging wherever possible.

As I said, nothing showed up in the logs and the switch in question reported OFF in the logs when it was actually still ON.

I have experienced a similar issue when my original GE switches died. It was causing some weird behaviour and nothing in my logs. When it finally died and I swapped it everything was good again.
