The title sounds a little more overblown than it needs to be ..... But it can pay to know what services or more generally what outcomes your always-on servers provide. I just realized my (old) always-on Windows laptop has the dynamic DNS update client service running, updating my no-ip host public address. I have since replaced that with a mini-pc, but have also tried using the laptop on another network, explaining the confusing resetting of the public IP I was seeing, playing havoc with my attempts to use my VPN.
Separate to my VPN issues, I thought it would be useful to encourage others to do what I should have done and capture the services my laptop was running that impacted my broader setup, like my VPN. How do others capture their setup? Not that I expect this is an issue, it is likely more an issue of knowing to do this....
Funny you should mention that -- I just set the Dynamic DNS thing up on my UDM Pro this weekend, and tried to document what I had done for the same reason you suggest.
Unfortunately, my "documentation" is a text note on my desktop machine. LOL.
Same thing with the new NTP server I commissioned the other day --- I definitely need to find a better way.
This is why I need up to date documentation and notes in a OneNote notebook with a copy in my ICE (In Case of Emergency) thumb drive that we keep in the family safe. I have network diagrams, password lists, and notes on what the Router, Servers, Hubitat all do.
It's best to start slow say with the core network and work your way out to services.
