Is there an auto update?

Please provide your hub model (C7, C8, etc.) and its platform version from Settings>Hub Details.

C8 hub. Is there going to be an alert for updates or an auto update feature. I’m tired of coming home and automations not working. That’s my que that there’s an update

I don’t understand why a pending update stops things from working. Come home, garage door geofencing open doesn’t work. Oh, Hubitat must have an update. Frustrating.

A hub update being available doesn't stop your hub from working, so I'd start by troubleshooting that. (I understand that you notice this correlation, so my guess is that the reboot -- which the update also does kicks -- something that makes things work again for you for a while.)

Without knowing more about your setup (what kind of devices, what devices or automations specifically and how they are set up, etc.), it's hard to say more, but I'd start here to find what may be applicable to your situation:

There are no plans to implement an auto-update, as it's always recommended that you read the release notes beforehand -- which, of course, can't be automated. But again, that correlation is really a distraction, so some troubleshooting first should help. Good luck!

It’s really only every time there’s an update. It’s rock solid 99.9% of the time. I have a hodgepodge of zwave lighting, Lutron Caseta, door locks, garage door. 3 different network solutions over the years, but always the same result. Update, stuff stops working (usually garage door integration). Today garage door and shades.

At the risk of jinxing myself, I've been updating Hubs for 7 years now and never encountered this before. I have 5 hubs in my home at this moment (4 are production, running the house. 1 is my development hub.) I've been through every iteration of hub too. C-3, C-4, C-5, C-7, C-8 and now, all 5 are C-8 Pro's.

I do NOT want to discount your experience, I'm just trying to say that you are correct to ask about it because, again, my experience, it's not at all normal.

My Garage Door is a Linear/GoControl ZWave product and as I said, I've seen upgrades hundreds of times by now.

I believe you are saying that JUST the appearance of the Red Dot in the corner, indicating an upgrade, is all it takes?

Having had both C7 and C8 hub, this has always been the issue. The hub is on UPS and will run forever until there’s an update.

I don’t see the dot until something doesn’t work and I drill into the hub. My garage door not opening is my notification that there’s an update.

I’ve had 8 hubs ranging from a C-5 to a C-8 Pro. A pending update has never stopped automations from running.

It's just a notification, like it's not using any resources at all... or is it?

Hi I'm trying to understand the ask or issue? If you are asking if Hubitat will add an auto-update feature, the answer has always been no. However, if you are asking if it is possible to update as a scheduled unattended process - yes, there is a great tool for that, just search for "Hub Updater v2" it's intended for multiple hubs but works just as well for one. You also mentioned the hub being on ups and running forever unless there is an update, which of course naturally reboots as part of the process but aside from rebooting I would strongly recommend a shutdown, then remove the power for a few min, then power it back on. This will give your radios a flush that reboot alone doesn't do. As others are siting I cant imagine the hub having a pending update (which is just a notification you can chose to ignore if you dont want to update) should not have any bearing on the hubs performance.

I'd suggest focusing on troubleshooting why your garage door stops working. If the outcome ends up being related to hub updates (which I would also be surprised by), then look at how best that can be addressed. More likely there is something that periodically stops your door / automation from working which happens on a similar timeframe to updates being available. I would focus on understanding that for now.

If you haven't listed it already, posting the model of the device for your garage door and any other details like the automation setup would be a good place to start, plus capturing some logs, as well as any other steps in the troubleshooting notes @bertabcd1234 posted.

Correlation does not imply causation....

The fallacy of pending updates causing hub failures has been discussed and debunked in this forum many times, so as others have noted, if you want to discover a true cause you'll need to look elsewhere - the usual first suspect is the amount free memory available...

In addition, as @kenrok1 noted there are several solutions that allow you to detect an update for your hub and install it "automatically".

Watching the Release category is sort of an alert you can set up.

It's the frequency of the updates Hubitat releases that make it seem a pending update is the source of the problem. Take for example the latest 2.5.1 version. We released seven updates within two weeks period. Did you notice your hub having problems every other day in the past two weeks? If so, please send me your hub id in a private message, as that would be indicative of a major issue with your hub.

My guess is that it is really the geofencing that is the issue. If you do some searching on geofence you will see that there are many discussions on randomness and work arounds. Like others have said, it is more than likely a coincidence. My hub will typically have updates pendings for days. I like to wait a little bit and let the bleeding edge folks update first and see if there are issues :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I am using Combined Presence App which works well. There are times that the app doesn't update location until launching it or with a long delay. There are other options out there but this one has been working for me and just haven't had time to play with others.

A few people have claimed this over the years. Nobody has been able to back up this claim with evidence, other than they see the hub isn't working and when they look, there is an update available. Updates happen fairly often, so it is no surprise there may be an update at any one point in time.

Staff insist that the notification alert is in no way tied to the hub functionality, it is just an indicator that pops up. I believe them because if it were causing issues, there would be mass postings every time that there is an update, and that doesn't happen.

I can only conclude the issue is something unique to a person's hub or environment,. Maybe a runaway app or device? Maybe something like power instability, bad network equipment, RF interference, or other factors in the home?
