Wondering if I an swap a Samsung smartthings multi sensor with another one without changing rules? I have a sensor who's battery only lasts a few weeks maybe because its been damaged from being outside uncovered for months on end.
I only know how to add a new device in devices then change all rules to this new device device then delete the old device from the device page. Quite a lot of effort
Only option I can think of is to clone the rules and use that interface to replace it in one rule at a time, but if it is the quantity of rules that is the issue, rather than the number of times it occurs in a small number of rules, then your not really gaining anything by cloning...
Yes. I think maybe I just have to grin and bare it. This time its only 3 rules and not that bad... but I've done it once before when moving sensors so this triggered me to askjng
I put all my motion sensors into a zone using zone manager.
This way you only have to change the device in zone manager as my rules use the zone manager device.
I do the same with contact sensors using device manager.
This my way round the issue.
I guess with webcore you could set each device to a global variable and then use the global variable in the pistons. You'd then only need to modify the global variable if a device changed.
I don't know if having a lot of global variables would impact on performance or not, anyone?
Might check with support first, but, in theory, if you’re removing the old sensor, you should be able to change the DNI on the new sensor to match that of the old one and have the rules work without pause. Haven’t tried it personally, but might be worth a shot.
I have done this on several occasion and it works perfectly - when the devices are the same type and brand. Be sure to change the DNI of the old sensor first. Also note that with Zigbee, you also have to “move” the Zigbee ID.
If you have multiple devices doing the same action, groups are a good way to get around it. Rule calls the group not the device. Then you just update the devices in the groups. Obviously this doesn’t work for every case.
I have used the Average All App to provide a combined reading for my contact sensors downstairs before I got to bed, referenced in a rule to let me know whether I need to go and close any of the doors or windows, more likely in the Summer. It is also useful as a single reading on a dashboard.
