I would like to make a duplicate of an existing app, as a starting point for making a variant with similar capabilities. I want to keep the source app as it is, and install the new app too.
If you have the source code just create a new app with it and change the name attribute in the definition section.

Do you mean install a new instance of the app or are you talking about using the source code and adopting the code for something else?
Many apps can have multiple instances of them when that makes sense, to do that, just try to "add user app" and see if that works. If not, you might have to to what @thebearmay suggested.

That works for Rules but he could be talking about Groovy apps. He was not specific but the way this thread is going it may be.
