I couple of years ago I found these GoControl kits at a local home depot store at a bargain price so I bought a few of them but never had the opportunity to actually unbox and used them (for different reasons).
Now that I'm finally having the opportunity to work my home automation stuff they seem a bit outdated. They are not Z-Wave plus, just Z-Wave.
I have quite a few of these contact sensors so my question is: should I avoid using them (throw them away)? Are they not safe because they are not z-wave plus?
I would hate to see about 20 sensors going to waste but on the other hand I don't want to start with anything that will give me headaches in the future.
I use a lot of those contact sensors. I don't use the motion sensors - they're slow. The contact sensors are really useful because they have external contacts allowing them to detect all sorts of things:
I use two as current sensors
1 as a pressure sensor
1 as a tilt sensor for my garage door
Thanks for the quick response guys.
it makes me feel better about the sensors. I'm no expert so I was just wondering about encrypted, non encrypted... all this security related stuff. After all, if someone can "break into your z-wave network" they could easily open your doors, couldn't them?
But if this is not a concern them I will end up using them all.
@aaiyar the option to connect external contacts is really a plus and open a lot of possibilities,
I will keep all the sensors.
What I don't need are the 7 sirens (I got 7 kits, one siren on each) in case they are any good and someone is interested.
Correct...this is not a concern. Nothing to see here, move along.
Generally the only devices I join w/security are locks.
[EDIT: On the other hand... @april.brandt, if you buy me a slurpee I will tell @embrito that the sensors are a HUGE SECUIRITY RISK and then he'll send them all to you for free!]
One reason I don't have automated locks. I'm old fashion that way.
However, unless you have a lot of obvious wealth the odds of someone with the ability to hack into your Z-Wave are slim. 90% of break-ins in our area are druggies looking for $$ to buy drugs I doubt they carry their Z-Wave hacking device with them
I have two of these sensors looking for a loving home (that isn't mine). I'm not sure if I can ship the batteries with them, but yours if you want them.
