Is my Generac running?

I have an old Generac generator with no connection to the outside world. The generator is outside the house, but the transfer switch is inside. I would like to know when the generator is running, or at least when it is providing power to the house.

Any sensor I install outside would either be enclosed in a metal case or exposed to the elements.

Is there something I can tap onto in the transfer case to detect when power is running through it? Someone in an earlier thread suggested using a window sensor in the transfer case looking for a magnetic field from a relay. This might work, but the transfer case is a metal box which would block the sensor signal.

Any suggestions?

Which specific model? I'm tagging @neonturbo. Your ATS may already have dry contact terminals (mine does), or this can be added. Dry contact terminals can be used to monitor when your generator is running.

Also, look into Genmon. I monitor/control/exercise my Generac using Genmon. AFAICT, it supports older Generac models as well. And doesn't require the generator to be cloud connected.

These will detect the presence of 120V (or 240v).

When S1 detects line voltage, if flips the relay on. You wouldn't need anything attached to the relay itself, but it will change the switch attribute to on in Hubitat when S1 gets line voltage, that you can trigger from for rules, etc.

If it’s only powered when the generator is on how would it maintain the Zigbee connection?

Zooz Zen 58 or Zen 57 if you prefer Z-Wave over Zigbee. These to can do long range LR too.

Mount a plastic water proof switch gang box on side of generator metal enclosure. Bring the wire carrying the signal to the Zen 58/57

The RF goes through the plastic box, I use a setup like this for my driveway gate metal enclosure.

I use the dry contact as mentioned above in the transfer switch. I have an Eco Link contact sensor wired to it.

For my generator, I use a ThirdReality Zigbee Vibration Sensor. Works a charm.

At a past location, I toyed with various current sensors wrapped around one of the power feeds from the generator to the transfer switch, but for as not-very-often as I actually lose power here, I find that just knowing when it's running is sufficient.

Answer

Most Generac's have a starter battery and a charger circuit that has grid A.C. to maintain charging and sometimes heaters.

Tap either that battery or the A.C. depending on use case, but battery would be best...

The generator is 11kw G0064830.
The Transfer Box is: OK0166B A.K.A. RTSY200A3.

That still leaves the problem of enclosing the device inside a metal box, or exposing it to the weather.

This would work if I knew how to identify the dry contact inside the transfer box.

You missed my previous post in this thread

Through hole is silicone sealed...

The box has gasketing that seals it and I tossed in some desiccants just to be sure

You're gonna have to go to the manual, alas.

I'd take the cover off the transfer switch and take a picture, if it would do any good. Mine is not that old.

Mine is about 12 years old. I looked through the manual, but there was nothing there that would help. Can you give me a hint as to what to look for when I open it up?

Oy

Probably a separate manual for the transfer switch.
They're online.

Thanks, I found the manual and the reference to the switch.
