I have had the C-7 for a little bit over a year now. I don't have many devices on it. Some are linked via Alexa, or Google. And I just got an Ecobee Thermostat this week. I ordered and received some Philips Hue, and I am going to order some Smart Plugs and Dimmer Switches, and Button Controllers this week from Amazon.
I was wondering if it is worth it to upgrade to the C-8, while I have an Amazon order ready to be placed.
Does the C-8 connect also via Wifi, or is it also only hard-wired, like the C-7? I know why Hardwired is better, because Wifi can be unreliable.
I do like the external Antennas, and also the Zigbee 3.0 Support. I don't think I have any Zigbee 3.0 devices (yet), but that change in the next few months.
Also, if I do upgrade, are they are specials going on right now for the C-8?
I'd probably stop at this point and say that you probably don't fall into the "need an upgrade" camp. Even w/your new devices you still be using just a small portion of your C7's capabilities.
Yes, but using Ethernet is still strongly suggested, as Wi-Fi connections are by their nature add an additional troubleshooting issue, and are never as reliable and dependable as Ethernet. In most cases I'd take Ethernet less centrally located over Wi-Fi centrally located.
The C7 can connect to Zigbee 3.0 devices, so you have support for them on your current hub (Zigbee 3.0 is backwards compatible).
Yes, still on a special:
There are some issues that a subset of C8 users are experiencing that HE staff is working on resolving, but have not been resolved yet. I'm confident they will be resolved, but if I wasn't already using my C8 I would probably wait a bit, You can buy the C8 now to lock in the sale price, and monitor the forum for when you want to move over to it via the free migration process.
unless you're looking for having more devices connect directly to your hub, or are interested in playing with matter down the line or using 800-series devices, just use the c-7 since it's working. shoot, i'm still using a c-5 for my home. i could migrate it to the c-7, but it works, so i ain't breaking it.
I'm oddly in this boat. I'm still running everything on my C5 and have a C7 in a box and now a C8 in a box. I've always wanted to make sure I have a secondary device for 'as fast as possible' recovery into a new one - which is why I bought my C7. But now that I have my C8, I'm hoping I can turn my C7 into a test/dev box at some point if I have time.
With even more time I'll migrate to the C8 and then buy another to have on hand. Just wish I could buy time.
i originally bought the C7 for a backup, but then did implement it for some ring sensors that needed the S2 security. was too lazy to migrate my other stuff over, so i have most of my devices on the C5, then S2 and zigbee on my C7, lol
You are onto something. I like to tinker with stuff. I need to hold myself back now with buying all these smart devices. I need to go slower. Do a few, see how they work, add my rules, etc. And then go onto the next room, etc.
I have so many old phone charger cables. But I am glad I kept them. For my work (IoT related), I needed to get Development Kit boards. And instead of using batteries, I wanted to use a USB Cable. So I kept the old Micro-USB cables, and I am glad I kept them. I need 5 of them at all times. So it helps to keep them
Hey, a box is a loosely defined term. I guess technically I started with a box, then went to a basket, now i guess the best term to describe my container of shame is crate...but i still call it a box to feel better.
Not quite done sorting through everything, but if I had to guess, at least 25% of this stuff has no current purpose, and another 25% likely will never have a specific purpose.
But that doesn’t mean I’m actually getting rid of any of it .
That is how my balloon stuff looks like. I am a balloon artist in the side. I have also an old VHS player. I have home movies still on VHS. I need to get a converter so I can digitize those
I bought that hub in 2015 I think, shortly after it came out. I already had a v1 hub, but they never came through on their purported efforts to create a migration utility.
Since the V2 hub was almost as completely cloud-dependent as the V1 hub, and its backup batteries were known to leak, I never really felt compelled to upgrade (manually).
Then Hubitat’s original hub, the C3, came out in 2018, I ditched ST and haven’t looked back since.
I wouldn’t recommend that anyone ever boot this thing up with the intent of using it with the ST platform.
Having said that, if you really want it, PM me and we can probably work something out.
That is fine. I did look into Samsung. Aeotec is now handling their products I think. What I read is that Samsung never really delivered on their promises.
I also like the hubitat. It is not cloud dependent, and it is not as complicated like the other ones, like home assistant. I liked into that, but right now you can't even get a raspberry pi anywhere. I want a raspberry for another project I want to built (grafana dashboard monitoring for my work, we are monitoring aws resources).
It’s true, Samsung now licenses their SmartThings hub and other device hardware production to Aeotec. The ST platform is still Samsung’s to shepherd on its continuing voyage of thoroughly unimpressive performance, though.
Several of Hubitat’s founders were disaffected ST users, and I agree Hubitat is simpler to use in several ways than Home Assistant. The totally open source nature of HA isn’t always a positive thing IMO.
I actually do run home assistant in a VM on a windows PC I have at home that’s always-on. If RPi’s are still hard to get at reasonable prices, consider a low-end Intel NUC box, or other similar SFF PC, you could run HA and other services on it too.
There are some devices or services that HA can integrate with, but there are no good options on Hubitat. And it’s easier to configure dashboards, including with historical device data graphing.
