Is a Z-Wave Device Exclusion the Same as a Factory Reset?

I don't know if this is dependent on the brand/device or part of the Z-Wave protocol, but does an Exclusion reset all parameters to their defaults? When removing a device, do I need to do a factory reset after an Exclusion? I've seen several device manuals that discourage doing a factory reset.

Not in my experience.

I suspect this may be a YMMV depending on the device...I do know that the exclusion process does clear the current Z-Wave tables/data from the device so it's ready to be re-joined and re-populate that information during its next inclusion.

Probably for the same reason HE is removing / moving the radio reset buttons. People do it and then afterwards realized they f'ed up and there is no undo button.

I think for most Zooz devices an exclusion resets all the settings, but I am guessing its going to depend on the device firmware to do it. Not sure if the Z-wave spec specifies any sort of requirement for it to happen. Some drivers will reconfigure all the settings when you include it again also, so you may not even be able to tell if the settings were retained or not.

I don't believe it does.

Many years ago, I used a Remotec ZXT-120 (z-wave/IR gateway) to control a window AC using a Wink hub. This device wasn't supported by Wink, and the Wink app had no way to configure IR commands.

So I paired the ZXT-120 to a handheld z-wave remote from Remotec, programmed it with the IR codes for my window unit, excluded it, and paired it with the Wink hub. The programmed IR codes were not reset - along with a few z-wave parameters (report in F instead or C).

I can see why they would discourage it. Performing a device reset detaches the device from the hub and creates a new node id. That effectively creates a ghost node on the hub side, so the next time you try to include the device, you will have two nodes for the same physical device. One dead, the other active. Performing an exclusion ensures the node is removed from the hub. Subsequent device reset is recommended, if the device offers that option (many devices don't).
