Inovelli Dimmers turning themselves off

I have a bunch of Inovelli Red Dimmers and a C7 hub. I'm running firmware 1.48 because I couldn't get the firmware to update on the 2nd switch I tried to updat, so stopped trying to do the others (but that's a different story). My C7 is running 2.3.0.113.

For the past few weeks, all of a sudden, I will turn on a light and then, after a bit, it will dim down and turn off. Sometimes it will come back on, but usually not.

For the ones I've associated I have these settings:
Master
1 (dimming), 0
2 (dimming at switch), 3
3 (ramp), 0
4 (ramp at switch) 0
9 (default level when powered on from switch), 99
10 (default level when powered on from Z-Wave), 99
11 (State after power restored), 100

12 (Association behavior) blank (i.e. default of 15)

Slave:
Master
1 (dimming), 3
2 (dimming at switch), 3
3 (ramp), 0
4 (ramp at switch) 0
9 (default level when powered on from switch), 99
10 (default level when powered on from Z-Wave), 99
11 (State after power restored), 100

For Param 12 (Association behavior) I have 1 pair with 12 set to 11 on the Master, on another pair I have 12 to 11 on the Slave and on my 3rd pair I have 12 set to 11 on both. I'm doing that to experiment as I found a post on the Inovelli site that said "You can have multiple destination devices in each association setup. If you have any associations that go both ways, make sure you change the “Association Behavior” parameter on one of them to 11"

Does that matter for the pairs?

Any idea why it is happening on red dimmers not in a 3-way (i.e. no association)? (While not in a 3-way they do have rules that say 1 push = 100 and a 1 held = 0 as I set the config button, #7, to a dim value, say about 30%, and want it to go to 100% when 1 pushed, even if on)

What do you see in the devices’ Events tab when this happens?

Do you by any chance use Alexa, and if so, do you have Hunches enabled?

I don't know what "events" would show as I'm in some other room when it happens, and often first thing in the morning or late at night.

I do have have Alexa, but I don't know what Hunches are. Also, for the involved lights I virtually always use the physical switch, so I don't know if/how Alexa would impact that.

For the events, you can go back and see what is recorded for those times. It can give a clue sometimes to what caused the light to turn on or off.

If the switch is shared with Alexa, Alexa can use « Hunches » to try to learn your patterns and control the lights for you. It does see when the light is turned on or off, even if done manually (the switches report that to the hub who reports it to Alexa as this is a requirement for the system to function properly). This can be useful if it is something you are looking for, but keeps otherwise… The recommendation to those that can control things on their own with Hubitat is to turn that functionality off.

Do I do that by saying "Alexa, turn off hunches"?

I just tried on mine and it then told me:
From the Alexa app: Settings -> Hunches Settings

Thanks. I went there and it showed "Set up Hunches" and there were 3 remaining; Turn off lights if you're asleep; Turn off the lights when you're away; and Remember to secure your home". Since it is asking to set those up, I'm assuming they are not on and it doesn't show any others on.

Okay, we can probably eliminate that as the source then.

Next, if you go to one of the problematic devices, on the bottom of the device’s details, there is a list of Applications that are using it. You should go to each to see if any of them could have caused it to turn on, then off.

Are people still dealing with this? I am ... My switch is about a week installed, and at first I thought I was crazy that it went off, but it for sure turns off by itself.

  • Inovelli ZWave Dimmer Switch (Red Series)
  • Set up as single-pole

I have 3 HUE BR30s and an Alexa connected to it. I use it because I want to shut Alexa off

It seemed like it was about a 10-15 minute cadence, then tonight it was only for 30+ minutes I thought it resolved itself, but it turned off. Ive triple checked the AUTO-off is set to 0 and saved preferences.

Ive just set it to a 6 hour timer, maybe that hacks it into place. I dont usually need it on longer than that.

Ive found other forums around this as well, but they all seem to end in 2020

If you have this device exposed to Alexa too, did you check the "hunches" feature as described above?

Its not exposed to Alexa and its on a

  • BUTTON app; which is what turns it on/off controls it (turned off physical because the dimmer was mucking things)
  • a Sat AM turn on rule because I want it to charge a Arl camera that is on an outlet (which I forgot to mention)

The other weird thing is, before the swap that arlo camera would charge, after, the device reports that it doesnt like the USB cable .. I didnt touch anything in that

It’s a shot in the dark, but have you considered unplugging the arlo for a bit to see if it is somehow creating a surge or other interuption that would briefly disconnect the switch? Or maybe check the voltage at the outlet and switch to make sure they have a good connection.

Thats actually a good idea ... I can give this a whirl. I might swap back the original switch to also see that things are steady state.

Ill try to do that this later this weekend ..
