[INCIDENT] Cloud backup failure leading to unresponsive Z-Wave devices

Running the latest 2.4.0.145 and the issue is still affecting my C-8, any updates on this?

I had to restart my device but this is causing major issues for me, as I'm needing to be remote and can't "remove power" upon shutdown/restart to get zwave working again, no to mention that I can't update lock codes, and that my backups aren't happening. As I'm getting the "Last cloud backup was unsuccessful. Failed steps: Z-Wave." error.

I have not introduced any new devices.

What information can I provide to help move this along?

Side note: BIG CONGRATS on the UI updates, it's getting much better!

If you are going to be gone and not making changes you can turn off the cloud backup while your gone. It's only going to keep making the same backup over and over.

Easy temp fix until the the problem is finally resolved for everyone.

What I'd suggest for now, until this issue is resolved for you:

  1. Update your lock codes (presumably this is working, and you said you couldn't update them because you wanted to be sure they were saved in your backup)
  2. Take a cloud backup manually
  3. Turn off scheduled cloud backups - you don't need one unless you make changes anyway, so just turn it off
  4. Take a manual backup when you make significant changes. That way you're there watching and can handle any errors that occur.

I know this means you can't just let the backups run in the background, but if you are going to be remote then something like above is going to be necessary while HE staff are working resolving the problem.

You could plug your hub into a wifi-based smart plug, as a last resort, to do the power cycle.
Just willy nilly turning it on and off might corrupt the database, which has happened to me.

You'd definitely want to do a clean shutdown BEFORE killing power with any switched outlet.

Of course. I said "last resort" and mentioned database corruption.

Agreed and that's the only way to get my zwave working again.

We keep it powered full time with battery backup, without just unplugging it and properly; shutdown, unpluged and replug after a minute.

The ONLY reason we've had to do this was because of zwave stops working, ugh! It seems consistant on zwave stopping working after so long, I'm not sure why but the only solution is the shutdown, unplug, restart.

Is this a hardware issue or software...? That's the question of the day.

It's not as much as a cloud backup issue as it is a zwave issue on my end. The two items might not be related but it seems my zwave stops and it then becomes an issue on backing up but again those might not be directly related.

If it's like the others, the issue is that the cloud backup is causing the Z-Wave network to go down. If you don't enable automatic backups while you're away, you eliminate the possibility of this happening. Take a cloud backup before you leave. Other than the state of your devices, nothing should change while you are away so you will still have a current backup when you return.

Hello. I’m on 2.4.0.146 and woke up to no zwave devices working. Logged into my hub and saw “Last cloud backup failed. Failed steps: Z-Wave.” and Z-wave unresponsive.

I shut down, then pulled power to the hub for 30 seconds to get z-wave working again.

I have not added any devices for months, and have not added any z-wave devices for years.

Unfortunately, it can occasionally do that.

If it's a huge issue, you can disable the automatic cloud backups and just do them periodically (and particularly after making any z-wave/zigbee changes).

Yes and to add to that they have been continuously trying to make improvements to this. I think the only thing that will 100% fix it is getting away from the SiLabs ZIP Gateway.

SiLabs Gateway<<

Now that's interesting.

Are you thinking of the entire SiLabs z-wave code or just the backups?

There is a "gateway" software that translates the z-wave radio messages to something the hub can work with. Up until recently SiLabs required that certified hubs use their "Z/IP Gateway" so Hubitat was complying. That software is probably what is preventing them from fully fixing the remaining z-wave issues. It is now deprecated, unsupported, and hubs are free to use whatever they want. So hopefully we will see that gateway swapped out for something better. There are a few different solid choices out there including a newer one from SiLabs called Unify Gateway.

Not even then.

It happens on occasion in Z-Wave JS too, which doesn't use the zip gateway.

Although in Z-Wave JS, it detects it and restarts it automatically, which seems to resolve/workaround it.

Thanks for the info!

This can be huge improvement for Hubitat and our zwave experience... Let's hope that this is on the priority list for them.
