In-canopy ceiling fan controllers in 2025?

I’ve seen a few old threads mentioning Inovelli and a couple others. What is the best way to do in-canopy smart ceiling fan control in 2025?

I’d like to be able to control light dimming and fan speed. The bulbs in my fans are incandescent. They currently have the typical RF modules that come in most ceiling fans. I also have a Bond hub, which is what I previously used to control them, but one of the modules has gone bad and I’d like to replace them with something better if there is something that exists.

It seems silly to go to the Bond hub to send an RF signal when I could just communicate with them over Zigby or Zwave directly from the Hubitat hub.

I also noticed there are ton of Wi-Fi controllers on Amazon, but they all seem to have their own proprietary app. Something like that might work if it had a generic Rest API I could write a driver for. Does anyone know of anything like that?

Thanks for your help!

I’ve setup the Inovelli Zigbee Canopy controller (VZM36) a while back and it works great! It replaced the RF sensor I had in my fan before and which I was controlling with a Broadlink RM 4 Pro.

Agree with @Sebastien, the Inovelli Zigbee Canopy modules are excellent. I've used the HBFC fan controllers, the Inovelli Red Fan/Light Zwave/RF units, and the VZM36'S, and the VZM36 is by far the best one.

But YMMV!

@scottgu3 , @Sebastien ,

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll give the Inovelli VZM36 modules a try.

Asuming fan motor is AC (not a DC) use a driver designed by @bertabcd1234 and use a dimmer option for controlling fan speed instead of fixed predefined speed settings.

So to get this straight....
The VZM36 module with the FAN output and bertabcd1234 driver will give speed control from 0 to 100% and not just 3 or 4 speeds?
This is what I have been looking for and most/all the fan speed controls are 3 or 4 speed (mostly 3 speed).
Is the fan's light also dimmable?

Yes, driver supports both speed control modes - dimmer 0-100% and preset speeds:

I am using Dimmer forboth my fans. For my fans Dimmer function works very well even thought it is not officially supported. Also not all fans could be happy when controloled by Dimmer. I am glad, my two fans are very happy.

Yes, the light controller is a dimmer.

If you are interested I have two of these that are brand new in box. I purchased them on the pre-order directly from inovelli with the assumption I would need them for my new house. But both new fans are dc motor based so I had to go with the broadlink RM4 pro to talk to the existing controllers.

I don’t know what they are worth now, but I’m willing to go half price plus shipping. I am in Canada btw.

Thanks! I looked at the driver and noticed that for fan speed there are 11 possible speeds!!!
This is what I was looking for, and THEN some!
I am thinking of getting the vzw35 fan speed switch. $10 bucks more but it has a fancy indicator as well, AND a community driver!!! (I think?)

I would be interested! I am in the United States in California.

Interested, Thank you

Thanks for the offer, Steve. That’s very kind!

Unfortunately, I already ordered from the website so feel free to offer it to one of the other folks who said they were interested.
