IKEA's Matter via Thread Collection is Released

While not fully available, IKEA just announced 21 new Matter via Thread devices. I'll be curious as to US pricing once available, but it is interesting to see such a large brand get behind both Matter and Thread.

With that said, bring on the Hubitat C-9 Pro Max Ultra edition so I can control thread devices natively!

Nothing has been announced for a Zwave 900 chip, so I guess you will have to settle with a C-8 Pro Max Ultra :upside_down_face:

It appears that a Thread router could be added with the current Zigbee radio, but it would be a choice of Zigbee or Thread, as the radio can't be used for both at once. However, if they did give us that option in a software update to switch the radio, a 2nd hub could be meshed and use the Zigbee Radio for Thread while still using the original Hub's radio for Zigbee now.

It would be nice for a future hub to add a dedicated Thread radio, and a Bluetooth radio would be a nice addition as well while they are at it

Sold! I do like your idea of allowing user controllable selection of the Zigbee radio, but it would probably make sense to just release a new C-8 that had a third radio. Granted, all of this is just tongue-in-cheek as I'm perfectly good with the current setup; though, I'm always willing to spend on something new and shiny!

With that said, based on initial pricing, these sensors look dirt cheap if the UK pricing is anything to go by. I'd expect them to be a little bit more expensive here in the US because of "stuff", but probably still cheaper than things on Amazon along with IKEA's name backing it up.

Yeah, it would be pretty pointless to change the platform software to allow switching a radio, if there is a plan in the pipes for adding a dedicated radio for Thread. However, if there is no plan to ever add another radio, a switch option would be nice. It would be a great use for old hubs people may have laying around, as my old C7 would make a great dedicated Thread router.

Yep. I'm not aware of any need I have for the upgrade from C-7 to C8 or C8 pro, but I'm very aware that a native HE Thread border router and bluetooth radio would be useful.

So for clarity:

  1. Will the new Ikea hub be a Thread border router?
  2. Will there be some way to connect the new ikea hub to HE?

IKEA DIRIGERA hubs already have a Thread radio; it was activated with a software update in July this year. It can create a new Thread 1.4 network, or it should be able to join an existing one, although I was not able to do it.

DIRIGERA hub connects to HE via Matter as a Matter Bridge device.

OK, so does this mean if I get either an old or a new Ikea Hub, I can do the following:

  1. Connect Level Bolt via Matter over Thread to Ikea hub
  2. Connect Ikea hub to Hubitat Elevation
  3. Control Level Bolt via Hubitat

My goal is item 3.
I currently don't own any other hubs or any Apple products that will function as a hub (only own an old Ipad and Iphone).

Yes if you get the device connected to an IKEA hub that will work as a matter bridge, then connect the IKEA hub to Hubitat via matter, then all the devices that are connected to the IKEA hub will come into Hubitat as child devices and you can control them in Hubitat.

Just make sure the IKEA hub you choose will perform as a matter bridge.

I use this method with SwitchBot and Aqara hubs for several devices.

If you only connect Matter over Thread devices to your Ikea hub, Item 2 is not necessary since you can control them through Matter directly with Hubitat

Yes, the Matter Bridge is used only for Zigbee devices paired to the IKEA hub. The IKEA Thread devices will use the DIRIGERA hub as a Thread Border Router only.
