And yes, Zigbee protocol is thought to make the signal jump from repeater to repeater allowing it to cover large areas. In my case, I have a rather large garden and all the lights are Zigbee managed (the same bulbs act as repeaters).
I believe Zigbee protocol manages up to four repeater relays for a signal.
