IFTTT now offers paid plans

The combination doesn't work for me. It's like a real estate agency charging both the buyer and the seller. Feels wrong - they need to decide whether they are charging the supplier or the end user not both.

The basic premise of this video is flawed.

I've bought switches that say "works with" whatever. It doesnt say " works with " what ever for "FREE"

If you're a microsoft fan. Office "works with windows".....doesnt mean its free. There are a ton of programs you pay for that "works with" microsoft...doesnt mean they are feee

People paid for the device..that device is compatible with X or Y...doesn't mean that other service is free

You have an option as a consumer....if you don't like the terms...don't buy it. If you bought it and something is no longer supported...don't recommend it..give it a bad review...send your feedback to the company....but dont complain that its not free.

Now i will say that i do agree with complaining that if a free service was an integral part of a purchase. Wink is a good example. if the basic functions stop unless you pay a fee..thats breaking the implied "contract" for the service. and there are means to deal with that if they were concerned about not pissing off customers. Grand father people in, Offer the basic services for free...advanced features for a fee.

But in the end....if a company cant make a suitable return on an investment...that business will go away..rather quickly. So even if a business model changes...thats the reality.
Unless we want a socialist society..and in which case...home automation would have never been developed at all!

I feel like they misjudged the commitment level they had with the companies that subscribed then to compensate the revenue loss they started charging users. Seems like they are on the way out to me now.

Interestingly, i just received a response to my feedback to IFTTT.
A gent from IFTTT replied, acknowledged that my message was received and that they appreciated the feedback on the pro pricing.
No guarantee they will act on it but feels good to know it was received and appreciated.

Was it a canned response or it feel like they were personally responding?

It sounded like a personal response.
However I asked a question so we’ll
See if I get an answer.

on the note of Paul Hibert and IFTTT, he did a video about using an android panel and just useing widgets, most of them are IFTTT widgets. I can see that this is a complete failure overtime.

I get IFTTT, I get the argument, but I guess if you use it to be the central part of your smart home, then it's worth the cost, I am starting to think that there are some people who really are "Pro" when it comes to IFTTT, and again as I said the cost becomes justified, but for a lot of us here, exp since we have a system that we rely on it being ALL local, we should really not have an issue with this, and really should be using IFTTT spartingly.

Also, the one thing that stops me from using IFTTT the most, is that there is no reporting, YES I can turn on the coffee pot with some cheep Wifi plug, but how do I know it really worked? HE tells me when the plug reports that it's on or off.. super important to me.

Two things I always disliked about IFTTT:

  1. Unpredictable latency. Maybe not even IFTTTs fault sometimes - but there is no way to know if it will take 1s or 30s for something to fire w/IFTTT. Or not happen at all/ever in some cases.
  2. Logging. I'll second @eaton.blumenstein there.

This guy has another spin on what they are doing. he did a interview with them also. I have not watched that yet.

“For a limited time, you may set your price for IFTTT Pro and we will honor it indefinitely. All subscriptions are in US$ and renew monthly.”

That’s new and very acceptable at $1.99 I think, we’ll I’m happy anyway.
Previously at $10 I was planning my exit strategy.

“Indefinitely” So they can raise the price whenever they decide.

I don't read 'honor' as meaning that

Is it possible they never really expected anyone to pay more than $1.99 a month and were just looking for a way to create some buzz/free PR when announcing the change in their plan structure?

Is there an attorney here that can clarify if that sentence means at some future date IFTTT can raise the price?

Don't need a lawyer / It doesn't matter. That statement is not a contract - it's a non-binding "promise".

Companies can't be held to non-contact language anyway. They can SAY whatever they want, as it is the agreement wording that matters.

Also "indefinitely" just means without defined time period - it doesn't explicitly mean "forever". If they really meant forever, they would have said forever.

So they are covered even if it were viewed as a verbal contract (which it is not).

Agreed. The point is moot. There's a thousand ways they could raise the price while keeping that statement true anyway, such as "While we are discontinuing IFTTT Pro, we are excited to announce IFTTT Extra Crispy at $5.99/month!".

That said, they understand reputation and I think they are unlikely to raise the price dramatically in the next two years for those that lock in now. Unless they are really trying to be like a cable company.

I'm considering subscribing just for a few months to give me time to workaround the few automations I have that depend on it. If Amazon Alexa would support controlling Amazon Blink cameras in routines, that would solve most of my need for custom applets.

I agree, we do not know how long that a price will stay, and I do assume they will move to another model. I watched the online interview with him, and he seemed pretty automate about keeping JUST the 3 free automation's and never adding any more . I would prefer perhaps a 5 or 10 automatons for perhaps $15 a year or something like that. I think they need to make the Pro stick out, but they also should make it where Pro becomes a little more worthwhile, not REQUIRED!

So - interesting email form IFTTT this morning.
They are allowing people to choose the 1.99 a month option indefinitely
Presume you can quit any time you like!
Think i'll take advantage of that. I recently recreated my applets for my Acs on and off with the price of electricity and it has been working flawlessly.
Thats worth 2 bucks a month

@JasonJoel looks like they’re using the f-word now .

But what does “forever” mean if you’re stuck in a time loop? How does the multiverse come into play?

On second thought, can we just file a class-action lawsuit now?

They must be listening to us! Creepy!

That's cool that they came up with a more reasonable price point. I expect that a lot of people would pay $1.99/mo that would not pay $9.99/mo.
