The chart on Amazon for the various HE hubs indicates the C-7 can't do Zwave LR. (pasted below). If I have a C-7 will the Zooz 800 series LR switches work with it? Are they backward compatible? Or does this mean I need a C-8 to use the new switches?
They should work on your C7 using the normal Z-Wave mesh. I'm currently using Zooz 800 series switches on my C5.

Yes, as stated above. I also have some LR devices on a C7 using regular zwave mesh.

Pairing LR is a no-go on the C7 and earlier models (not the right chip)s, but as others have said, you can pair a 800LR device non-LR (regular mesh).
The C8/Pro can pair an 800LR device as either mesh or LR.

Z-wave is nearly fully forwards and backwards compatible. Especially once you get to 500+ series, any device will connect to any controller.
