Hubitat, as a invested user of your device. ... My primary concern is your business model. I do not want Hubitat to be another Smartthings and die or wither on the vine. I really love the engine and the locality of processing for Home Automation. My belief if Hubitat needs to make revenue as this thing get bigger. I support Hubitat to have a monthly fee based subscription for users to bring in more support help and engineering. To start Hubitat needs to market themselves better and expand into SCADA smart devices for business. What do you think? What is the business model aside from selling C7 hardware? Lets as a user community support Hubitat and expand it for future stability. I don't want this thing to be Smartthings failure. Also as Samsung abandons the Home Automation platform, Hubitat will be the go to device.
Lets all also start certification system for advanced Home Automation and Business Automation consultants.
Wish List: ICMP Ping, SNMP Set and Gets, Traps Please!
That was your choice, informed by whatever you knew at the time. Hubitat Inc's business model is their business; I'm sure they're interested in staying in business.
Can we stick to discussing our hubs and automation on the community forum?
Thanks!
Edit: You should put your wish list as feature requests under Support. Personally, I can see the value of supporting ICMP echo requests. But I don't view my hub as a network management tool.
Ah!, but it could be
Since coming to Hubitat almost two years ago I found many uses for my hub beyond simple home automation. The flexibility of this little box is nothing short of amazing. And even IF Hubitat Inc. were to go away, I still have a little box that keeps working, unlike some of those other cloud based solutions.
Yeh but you won't get any new features, the community will be dead, no support for new devices,... down spiral.
Then you should start using HomeAssistant as a backup, like HomeAssistant Blue as backup just in case XD
Truth is, if Hubitat went away today and the community died with it, I have every feature I need. Granted, there have been features added that have improved the platform but many of those features were already being provided by a third party. As stated in the OP wishlist, having those features added to the platform would be nice, but it isn't critical as I already have those capabilities, just not performed by the Hubitat. The entire reason I came to Hubitat was securing a long term solution that even if the company were dissolve overnight, my automations keep going. When I backed SmartThings in the very beginning I never thought it was going to be fully dependent on the cloud. A cloud that could dissipate leaving my investment bricked. While Hubitat isn't perfect, they sure picked the right direction by making the cloud secondary and not primary.
True but, remember tech comes and goes. Watch this video, and you will understand what I mean.
Never say never just have backups you will thank me later
I also fell for it and will start getting into homeassistant for backup. Some examples TPlink I liked the HS110 until they made it cloudlocked. IFTTT went pro. Wink bancrupt, Smartthings is cloudbased and killed all the features. Broadlink went cloudlocked. Logitech killed the local. Switchbot only cloud, Tuya only cloud if not flashed. Google assistant, doesn't even have proper routines after 3 years. Why? Just look at these examples and make your own conclusion, companies are not to make you happy but to make profit. And they will kill tech just to make you upgrade. Also sonos killing old speakers with firmware upgrade,... Just look on reddit you will find enough stuff. What if the zigbee protocol dies and you don't have any upgrades, Your hubitat hub dies, and your whole "smarthome" is dead.
I don't regret the $$$ I spent on those, because I got value for it, until something better came along.
Today, I'm spending $$$ on Zigbee and Hubitat, and getting great value for it. Absolutely, something better will come along, someday, but still: no regrets.
I had X10 for years and when I moved to SmartThings I sold them all and made some good money. At the time people were buying up X10 left and right so it was a good time to sell.
Because I was lucky enough to watch a friend of mine start w/IR and X-10, I was smart enough to stay away from that. Oh the hours he spent...
I'll leave the business model/plan to Hubitat, that is their business, literally. The hub backup subscription is their first (careful) step into new business models, glad to see it happening if it adds stability to the platform. Frankly, I worry more about a buy-out (remember? SmartThings wasn't always Samsung) that ends up ruining the platform as has happened w/ST.
These threads never go very far because we don’t actually know their business model, even though we’re very enthusiastic users. Their actual investors might know more. But it’s not something I would expect the company to discuss here in detail.
Wifi-based plugs are even worse, some devices only work on 2.4Ghz also old security, meaning you need old router or old bands, which are easily hacked from across the street, probably in 2-6 hours, with new crazy fast laptops coming out, not upgrading your routers and wifi security your smarthome, would be useless, if thieves don't need only 1 laptop to disable your whole smarthome, know your routines, and take over your "smarthome".
Keeping yourself up-to-date with security is a must, but also upgrading your "smarthome devices".
I still have some AMX equipment (including a 10" touchscreen!) I bought used over 10 years ago to run the home theatre room of a previous home I owned. It was all hardwired and a bear to develop for,... but it worked. I don't regret the cost and time. As you said "I got value for it."
