Hub just crashed

My hub just became unreachable for the first time ever, hasn't happened in the 1 year I've been with Hubitat. The web interface was completely unreachable and none of my automations were working. I rebooted and everything came back. Upon looking at the logs, there is a 3 hour gap where there are no events. Can any of the devs look into my logs and see if they can figure out what happened?

I'm assuming you rebooted by pulling the power cord. That isn't recommended, but if you have no other option, what else can you do. I've pulled power on my C4 many times, but not lately. What is your unit? C3, C4, C5 or C7? Glad you're back up and running. Some might suggest you do a backup to you PC, then a soft reset and finally restore the file you backed up.

Thanks. It's a c7 and yea I had to pull the cord to reboot. I'll try a reset if it happens again. It's just really strange because this is the first time it's ever happened
Edit: the light remained green when it was locked up

It won't hurt to do a backup, soft reset and restore from the backup just to clear out any possible corruption that could exist in your system.

Makes me a little nervous when I hear of a C7 acting up. I'm in the last half of moving from my C4 to a C7. The C4 has run well for a few years, but is starting to show it's age. The LED no longer lights and it has died a couple times, and many times the Zigbee goes offline and does not come back unless I reboot the hub. Used to be the zigbee would come back online after 6 minutes.

Could you please send me a private message along with your hub ID? We would be happy to take a look.

The failure rate of C7 is so insignificant, that worrying about it acting up, is like worrying that your car wouldn't start. You have no greater risk of the hub acting up, than the risk associated with any other electronic device acting up.

I concur with @bobbyd's statement about core hub hardware reliability. I've been fairly active in this community for a couple years and rarely does a lock-up turn out to be hardware or the platform itself. Not to say there aren't platform bugs... but they don't result in a lock-up and they are identified and addressed pretty quickly. The hardware incident rate is not zero, but it is very small. Otherwise they'd charge a lot more for the hub protect product!

Usually when folks have lock up issues it's something outside of HE's control - a third party integration or app that sucks memory or causes high CPU, for instance. Or a hardware device that starts spamming the mesh, a network problem, etc. If there's nothing obvious in the engineering logs I might suggest the use of @thebearmay's excellent Hub Info driver to monitor some key metrics. I keep an eye on memory especially, because I run a lot of third party integrations and they are not always as well-behaved as one would like. I have been pretty successful at identifying the worst offenders but I still have the hub reboot itself if free memory gets too low.

Thanks for that Bobby. Hubitat has become a major device in our home. I would sooner see my refrigerator die than my Hubitat. As soon as i complete my migration i will sign up for backup protection. I have a couple spare C7s.

Great to see such positivity on a topic titled "Hub just crashed"....

Just to put it into a different perspective, people don't join the community to announce that their hub works as expected, they usually come here when they have a problem. Thousands upon thousands never even create a community account.

Sounds like you need to construct a simple defect we can all fix to promote more Community engagement...

Well, that's probably good. Otherwise we would have 25K posts showing:

My C7 hub crashed last weekend. I realized all my automations around the house had stopped working and found the hub unresponsive to my login attempts. I’m sure an uncontrolled shutdown caused the crash. A few hours before I noticed the hub was down, I moved power adaptors around on my UPS and pulled the hub’s by mistake – maybe even a few times in a row. After reading through a bunch of online documentation and searching this forum, I managed to do a soft reset and fully recover. So yes, we have another happy ending to this hub crashed topic.

Update: @bobbyD had a look at my hub and everything seems to be just fine. I'll keep an eye on it but as of now everything is humming along nicely

I’d suggest maybe using Hub Info to monitor free memory. I will generally reboot if it stays below 150,000 or so.
