Hello - so I decided to take baby steps into making small changes to a driver. I'm wondering if there is a way to test this other than installing it on my "live" hub?
Nope. You'd need some kind of Hubitat emulator which doesn't exist.
Short of having a second hub....

Actually it was your driver (Hub Details) that I was playing with! Been thinking about getting another C-5 off eBay. Not sure if that is “safe”..
There are some small differences including the chipset, but several people run multiple hubs.

Yep - I’m not sold on the C-7 700 series ZWave, and if I only want a test/backup maybe C-5 is best.
There is a chance if you email support they have some c5s laying around they might sell you
