I go to devices and then ‘+ Add Device’ tab’ and nowhere does it say add in smart start mode.
Can someone verify I’m not going crazy and tell me how to do it?
It does not sound like you are using the mobile app. There is no "+ Add Device" button in the mobile app. It sounds like you are using the web UI, which has a "Devices" menu/page that does have this button (which can be accessed from the mobile app but is not necessary to use to get there).
You want to go to the "Devices" tab at the bottom of the mobile app (light bulb icon). Then you'll have a "+" button in the upper right and will see the documented options that sounds like you are already looking for.
Note that your phone must be connected to the same network as your hub for this to work (e.g., it will not work if you are away or on cell data).
