If you traverse this community long enough, you are bound to see the recommendation while troubleshooting Z-Wave issues to do a radio reset. Each time it is agreed that the same 4 key elements must happen:
Shut Down
Remove Power
Wait for [duration]
Power back up
My question relates to #3: I have seen so many different answers for this variable - 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, and I even saw 10 minutes once.
All of the above durations were cited by very well respected/active members of the community, but I was wondering if anyone actually has the authoritative answer to how long the hub needs to be shut down for the Z-Wave Radio to get reset. Or do different durations allow for different things to happen (e.g. devices to also realize that they aren't connected anymore)?
Staff have usually recommended around (at least) 30 seconds. The actual time is probably less, with this likely being a safe time to recommend to account for any odd cases plus estimations some people might make in light of the fact that they aren't going to sit there with a stopwatch.
Some community members have recommend minutes, sometimes quite a few of them. I suspect this results from confusion over Zigbee panic mode recommendations (20+ minutes). The harm is generally little in doing more, like this, and due to the frequency of such posts I've given up trying to clarify this where I see it. But you don't need to go nearly that long for Z-Wave.
10 seconds worked for me every time when I was having issues with the zwave radio locking up. Literally counting to 10, I am impatient, any longer and I would have to find something to do in those extra 20 seconds. All you need to do is get the radio to power down so it restarts.
I have been recommending 30 seconds just to make sure people go long enough, anything more than that does no good for zwave issues.
