I just started using a few more Zigbee devices of late. I installed a smart plug and it seems to work fine but once in a while it gets lost and doesn’t respond to on/off commands. If I power cycle the device it works fine again.
I just sent an off command to the plug and was surprised it generated so many log entries. Is that indicative of poor comms and a lot of retry messages?
The smart plug is 25’ from hubitat (on the same floor) and just around a slight corner so not pure line of sight.
Is this normal for Zigbee? Anything jump out from this data? If zigbee is fragile I really don’t want to wade into it much further.
p.s. I have no idea what node 0000 is but it shows up.
Not an expert, but based on my own experience, I do not find zigbee to be “chattier” than anything else on my hub (which also includes z-wave devices and various IP-based device integrations).
Might be something more specific to your device, zigbee mesh, or other aspects of the local RF environment.
I wouldn’t worry about it unless you are experiencing actual issues. Messages per minute is a useful metric but doesn’t capture burst traffic.
Using the app referenced in this topic, you can see what the device is chatting about:
Is this a power reporting PR plug? If so, disable/minimize any PR options that you can live without (which may be all of them).
I don’t have any experience with their plugs, but Third Reality does have a bit of a checkered history overall with abnormally chatty devices... That said, I do recall seeing quite a few posts here about folks lovin’ the 3R plugs, so
Is the plug’s firmware up-to-date (at least in terms of what Hubitat has available for it)?
I notice you’re using the generic driver. No issue there but I have 15 of these throughout my home and I moved to the community driver called Third Reality Power Meter Plug. The OTA firmware works I feel better with the Community driver too.
As one of the previous (smarter) posters said - sometimes its not the device but the apps that use it.
Heres the msg count for 24 hrs.
I switched the driver as I wanted the Power features, which this unit provides very well.
