Has anyone thought about running a local voice assistant like Home Assistant Voice as an alternative to google home/Alexa? I sure would like to . I am tired of google.
Thought about it. Watched the current reviews (there are many), the thought went away.
I to have looked at reviews and although I do have a few Pi 4's laying around doing nothing I decided it was not worth the effort for now. If you already have HA and it's bridged with your HE, you could get the voice assistant and test it, it would be pretty much the same as setting up Google Home or Alexa on the HE side but 500% more complicated on the HA side of course.
After experiencing the Home Assistant Voice my son has installed at his house, I realized that it still has quite a way to go. "Hey RaspPi ("razz pee") turn on the kitchen lights" worked about 50% of the time. I definitely think it is something to watch and consider in the future, however.
The "Ok Nabu" default wake word is almost 100%, probably because it's had the most training and tweaking. But the sentence recognition has a way to go. Alexa is much more mature.
It wasn't just the wake word. There was having to pause a moment after the wake word when speaking. I forget the exact phrasing problems (this was back during Thanksgiving), but it also has issues detecting some of the device names.
Based on the comments that I have read over at HA Community, it seems like the Home Assistant users that think of the new voice assistant as a Beta product are happy with it and the users that are expecting it to be Alexa or Google already are very disappointed.
I have one of the Home Assistant Voice things that came out a couple months back, and I can say that in its current state, it is AWFUL. I'm sure it will get better as time goes in, but right now it legitimately sucks and I don't recommend.
