HE losses connection to GE 45856

Has anyone seen this :

I have a Zigbee GE 45856 (many) all paired to the HE.. initially no issues.. the dashboard and the Device controls all work fine and can toggle the switch. After some time (30 mins to 1 hr) some switches dont work from the Dashboard or the Device control in HE.

The only way to get it to work is :
(1) Physically turn the switch off and on (this almost always works!) - then HE is fine to control.
(2) Hitting Refresh or Configure on the Device in HE (this works around 25% of the time)

Are my GE switches "sleeping" ? i have recently moved my Hub to a more central location and I was instructed, from this forum, to "leave things alone to settle within the Zigbee network". Its been 24 hrs and I'm still getting these issues..

I initially thought it was the driver I was using (using the Generic Zigbee Switch and GE Zigbee Switch drivers). But really unsure anymore....

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Sometimes it takes more than 24 hours for things to settle. Did you move the hub because you were having issues? If you weren't having issues maybe your more central location is not as good as you thought?

You can get some indication of the health of your zigbee network with this link... if you want to take a screen shot of the results it may help.

http://[insert your hub's IP here]/hub/zigbee/getChildAndRouteInfo

The other thing that might help is to safely shut down your hub, remove power (at the wall, not by pulling the USB connector), wait 30 min or so, and plug it back in. This should cause the zigbee network to rebuild itself. It still may take a while to get everything working again.

thanks brad.. yes i moved the hub because i was getting weird behaviour.. with it moved, things appear to be better except for the above mentioned issue.

I did try the http://[insert your hub's IP here]/hub/zigbee/getChildAndRouteInfo, command.. I must admit that I dont understand it.. Does it show signal strength ?.. Because I'm not sure if it shows the entire network.

LQI is an indicator of the quality of the link to those devices connected directly to the hub... yours all look pretty healthy. Low incost and outcost numbers are also indicative of the relative "cost" of routes to and from those devices. Low is good though zero basically means "unknown."

Have you taken a look to see if your 2.4ghz wifi network might be causing interference? Do you know what channel it is using and what channel your hub is using? And how far is your hub from the nearest access point?

brad thanks for comments and advice..

My HE is running on channel 20..

My home wifi is using the Velop Mesh router and it doesnt show me what channel its using (my other routers do show the channel but the linksys velop mesh doesnt).

Probably not the source of your issues but I had YEARS of anguish and frustration with Velop. Ripped it all out about 18 months ago and never looked back. How close is the nearest Velop node to your HE? And did you give the 30 min shutdown a try?

Also if it is just those few devices having issues you might try re-pairing them without unpairing them first. A zigbee device that is re-paired like that will slide right back into its "slot" in HE without requiring any rewriting of rules.

Can you use a scanner on your phone or computer to figure out which 2.4 GHz channel is being used by your Velop mesh?

Your mesh looks good. So I'm kind of puzzled why you have these lingering issues. I'm inclined to agree with @brad5 that you might have zigbee/wifi interference.

I do recommend figuring out all the WiFi channels used in your house, and then picking a zigbee channel that is far away from them. Also recommend using a 20MHz wide 2.4 GHz WiFi channel and not a 40 MHz channel width. This chart should help:

My HE is sitting (literally) on the top of my Velop..

Not at all a good idea. Please separate them.

I scanned by wifi and heres what I found : My home wifi is called "delcorp"

image

If i understand this correctly, my home wifi appears to be running between wifi channels 5 to 9. My Hubitat is on zigbee channel 20 - So i believe that they do overlap.

Understanding that I cant change my Velop wifi channels - I suppose I could move my HE to a higher zigbee channel.. like channel 24..

This screenshot looks like WiFi Explorer on a Mac. To get a cleaner picture of just DelCorp, "type Delcorp" in the Filter box on the upper right hand corner.

To my eyes, Delcorp seems to be using Channels 4, 5, and 7 - but a cleaner screenshot would help.

You could consider channels 24 or 25.

And definitely don't put your HE on top your Velop router.

thanks aaiyer... yes brilliant move on my part with HE using Velop as a stool.. My HE is plugged into my velop.. how far should they practically be ?

Heres the scan again just with Delcorp..

So Delcorp is using channels 4, 5, 7, and 8. So zigbee channel 20 is not a good idea. I would suggest 23, 24, or 25 - especially 25.

And keep the router away from HE by at least 2-3 feet. WiFi signals are much stronger than zigbee.

Remember when you change zigbee channels, it will take a while for your zigbee devices to find the new channels.

Some might have to the factory reset and re-paired, but they will rejoin with the original device names and device-ids on HE. Just don't delete the Hubitat device. Simply reset the device and put your HE into zigbee pairing mode.

aaiyar - thanks for all your help - very much appreciated !!

LOL ok. While it may look like a convenient HE stand... that definitely isn't helping

I bet the Linksys hops channels... in other words while it is using 4, 5, and 6 today, it may decide to switch channels and end up somewhere else. And the interference need not necessarily be from your wifi network, it could be a neighbor, though it does decrease with distance. Hence a new HE stand.

That would be horrible.

@fdelima @brad5

Got some good news. Looks like you can set a specific channel for Velops.

Just found this on Reddit (r/linksysvelops). You have to log in via web browser as directed in the answer by Santino_18.

@fdelima and the channel hopping is done with the channel finder feature... so it does not appear to be automatic!

Gotta love Reddit.

Just checked my network management software. There are 179 2.4ghz wireless networks in range of mine. Yuck. I'm just happy my zigbee stuff is all working!
