It’s a 240v powered device not low power like USB.
If you’ve got a friendly electrician they could throw a 3 pin plug on one side and a bayonet or screw, light socket on the other. Then you’d be good to go.
I doubt Jaycar staff would do it for you but there no harm in asking.
Alternatively ikea sell Lamp kits which usually are a power cord with an in-line switch and a lamp socket. Just cut the switch off and wire up the Zigbee unit.
I’ve got one on order so I can let you know how it works out.
Please note:
L = A = Brown
N= N = Blue
E = E = Green/Yellow = Ground
If the above makes no sense - don’t attempt to wire any 240v parts.
More to the point of a repeater, you don't even need a socket on the other side. Yes it can be used as a controllable power switch, but if you're just looking to use it as a Zigbee repeater, you only need to attach a power cord to it.
@njanda What does A stand for in Australian wiring? Is that the Aus wire?
This device doesn't have a means for grounding. What's the electrical code in Australia? Do you have ungrounded devices or is a ground wire a requirement on all devices (which is technically impossible to implement in 100% of devices)?
A = Active
We have Active, Neutral and Earth/ground
Items do not HAVE to be grounded but the 240v mains supply is Earth referenced.
Active is 240v AC potential difference from ground.
The Neutral is a return conductor for current to go back to a common ground.
Earth/ ground is for safety. Usually connected to a devices metal chassis.
A device can be Double Insulated which ensures there is zero possibility of a loose or damaged wire making contact with an external conducting part.
Double Insulated devices just have Active and Neutral wiring. 2 pin plugs etc.
I see this also with my HUE, IKEA and HE combo in my summer house. I also have a HUE only at home with IKEA bulbs, but never see the blinking there. I don't see the same amount of blinking as you, but once in a while it seems to happen.
yes mike, we know ur position on them
But on this island where devices are hard to come by and typically 400% higher price for the devices they do stock, sometimes you have to go with what you can buy/afford.
I have spoken to Ikea this morning and they have suggested some bulbs are bad batches and or the Zigbee network may need improving.
The person I spoke to has a Hue and he has never had the issue but has heard of it. They suggested trying to pinpoint which bulb/bulbs it might be by removing the flashing culprits and see if it fixes itself (and then replace it with IKEA)
Making the mesh stronger = more devices although I suspect if you already have plenty of bulbs then that won't be the issue.
I have heard that the outlets can be connected to Hue, I'm going to also try that to eliminate a weak mesh. It's more likely to be faulty bulbs. I guess part of the reason they are cheap is the lack of QC?
cheers, I have the bulbs but not the boxes anymore.
it happens so infrequently that its not on my hitlist at the moment, abet it is annoying as my mrs uses the kitchen with the bulbs at night for her business and Im sure she swears under her breath when it happens.. lol
I have had problems joining 4 bulbs, and have a new hue bridge coming.
I might try and add those bulbs to that hub to test, and if its no different might sell the hub and return the bulbs. Probably $100 worth of store credit right there.. (even though they are 4 different types of bulbs ?) lol
If they don't join apparently it's a firmware issue and you might need to get the updated firmware, the older firmware didn't allow Hue integration. I just returned one that has that issue and have another on the way. I am hoping this will be resolved
I have a ikea bridge here, update the bulb, exclude it from the hub and try multiple times (up to 6 times per bulb) and nothing, yet other people on the forum have the same bulbs on the hue hubs. its confusing, hoping this new hue hub fixes the issue lol
DId they release a new Hue hub then? I must check if I have an old one. Ikea is all very odd and they are very sporadic with things working and not. If you leave near an Ikea (most people don't) you should just keep taking them back till it works.
There are some people here as you said that have lots of tradfri bulbs and have zero issues.,it's kinda worth the hassle against expensive Hue stuff that always works.
nope not a new hue model, just a second device that "might" work. Thats what its come to now. Oh yes, my ikea is in my local westfield.. 4 minutes drive.
Yeah - im contemplating $45 bulbs as "normal/cheap" for hue as it is 4x the price of an ikea bulb, but probably 4x less painful/a hassle
