Having network issues with C7 & C8

I have been using Hubitat for almost three years now, bought a new router earlier this year, the C7 had a lot of issues, anytime I updated anything on the router, the C7's link would drop and I would have to pull the power on the C7 and it would link up again. Annoying.. I upgrade the router with OpenWRT and now it doesn't work at all. Well stupid me bought a C8 a few weeks back for over $200CAD. I'll just use the wifi right? Drops connection nightly, tried a few different routers.. Hot garbage..

I just installed HA and took a look around... I feel like I wasted not only $200 but three years of my life..

Junk

Have you requested any help in solving your issues?

Guess not as this is their first post....DHCP issues and Hubitat gets slated as 'junk'

That was my point.

Yeah I realised that. We do see fair few users condemn the product before seeking help. I can't recall what comes in the box when we buy a hub, but I think a reference to this community would be advantageous. So many issues get resolved with the assistance of other users here, that some posts like this could be avoided.

Could you clarify something please.
Are you saying everything was ok until you changed your router.

Many modern routers donโ€™t like having 100 Mbit devices plugged in to them, my Synolgy router is the same. This is easily solved with an additional, cheap 5 port unmanaged switch.

Calling Hubitat hot garbage because it doesnโ€™t play nice with your router is quite silly. Itโ€™s not like 100 Mbps has gone away, many low power, low bandwidth devices still use it.

Is the router set for a STATIC IP? Hubitat works best with a reserved IP.

@kutty

I am sorry you are having issues. It sounds more like a network issue than a Hubitat issue. Are you using the OEM power supplies? If not, I would use them during diags. If so, find a different one (most phone warts will work). Change the network cable. Make sure that on your c7 and c8 that network speed is set to Auto. Did you follow the quick start instructions to get it connected to wifi?

If none of those are working, please put in a ticket by going to Warranty โ€“ Hubitat Support and @bobbyd will take a look at the situation.

Like I said I have been using the C7 for three years, I have exhausted all options from auto negotiate, 100mbps, static ip, reserved dhcp, different patch cables, whatever. I finally got it working, upgrade router firmware and its dead in the water again. So I temporarily connect it to a port on one of the APs and purchase the C8 hoping these issues were resolved and tried using it over wifi first. It has only four zwave devices paired with a couple more shared via Hub Mesh and the thing can't stay connected on wifi for more than 24 hours, the light stays green but its unresponsive.

I started searching the forums to resolve my issue and realized quite a bit of people are having these same issues and they don't seem to be getting resolved.

I'm hoping to get it stable enough to use as a radio for HA but the weakest link in my setup are these overpriced garbage boxes..

I can say that the majority of purchasers aren't having these issues. The reason it seems like a lot is people typically post only when they're having problems.

That said I have 3 (2 c7's and a c8) connected to my network. 0 issues. Using around 200 devices. So just because you're having a problem doesn't mean they're crap. I would encourage you to reach out to the @support_team so they can check your engineering logs and see what's going on. For giggles check if you have jumbo frames enabled anywhere on your network...

I don't have jumbo frames, but it's something I was planning on enabling soon. See more limitations on my system because of garbage box.

I really appreciate the help guys and I wish it would just work but I'm really just venting after spending two hundred bucks on another one of these things before I could see the writing on the wall. This was my first home auto setup and it was great when I had only a few switches and locks but I think something a bit more capable is required.

Hubitat, for price of your product the network should not be this finicky, I shouldn't have to google around looking for the special url to update the ssl cert, You marketed this thing with wifi then recommended customers don't use wifi. I searched the net trying to find the wifi radio specs? Never found them.. Do better.

Have you reached out to support at all?

Actually JF tend to be garbage as there is no set standard for them from vendor to vendor.... In most data centers I work in we disable them right off the bat to prevent issues. JF on even a home network is also useless.

Hopefully you don't disable them on SANs... They make an ENORMOUS difference there.

But yeah, on general use networks we 100% disable them 100% of the time.

Jumbo Frames on anything other than a dedicated SAN network is dumb/pointless/will lead to more issues than benefit.

I've even run into probs there with certain san's and cisco equipment... It can get ugly..

No argument. I spend a few hours every time I setup a new dedicated SAN getting devices to get their frame sizes right and testing it out. It is worth it on those as it measurably improves throughput and packet rates, but it is definitely not "plug and play" even there.

And on a general use network, forget it. It will always be an issue. They shouldn't even expose that option in consumer level switches/routers.

It also doesn't help that everyone and they're brother think that because they watched a howto video on youtube or read a step by step neither of which accounts for the myriad of devices out there think that they know what the hell they're doing. Meanwhile guys like you and I have spent years doing this stuff professionally. Even after 37 years of doing this stuff, I still run in to things that I would rather ask you or another associate about because likely they've already run into it and I don't have to mess around and get frustrated and angry.

15 years as field engineer working on enterprise gear in DCs. Just saying this isn't my first time plugging stuff in...

Thanks for your feedback! Based on the details provided thus far, I don't think you had a chance to explore the full capabilities of your new hub. It sounds like you ran into some local network issues that have severely limited your ability to connect dozens of devices that your hub can easily handle.

We wish you good luck with your newly discovered platform, and know that if you change your mind, and decide that it's time for something a bit more capable that can handle different mesh networks with ease, we will be here to help you out.

And yes, we market the hub as having Wi-Fi, because it does, but we also don't recommend its use for extended period of time because generally speaking, an Ethernet connection is more reliable and has lower latency than wireless connections.

So what you are saying is that you never reached out to support to try and solve your problem.... Well as @bobbyd says, good luck on your new platform! If you decide to ever come back, please contact support so you can figure out what is going on....
