Got a Z-Wave stick; now what?

Received a Zooz ZST10 (Z-Wave Plus, not 700) yesterday. It is included on my C7 and I am running PC Controller. So, now what exactly is it good for?

I bought this a few weeks ago to update firmware on 2 Zooz devices and 1 Inovelli device. Since USPS lost the package for a couple of weeks, I had time to discover that the Device Firmware Updater app worked just fine for the Zooz devices.

Not sure yet if the stick gains me anything for the Inovelli LZW42. It has been a special kind of hell due to initial inclusion with S0 and also because of distance.

I have no lingering ghost devices and it seems like there is not much that I cannot do directly from my hub. So, did I just waste my money? Or is there some other superpower that I should know about?

Up to you. :slight_smile: But I think the stick is nice to have around if you have a C-7 for a few reasons:

  1. While you got the firmware updates done using the built-in app, I've had some devices that only work reliably with something external (Inovelli LZW30-SN, I'm looking at you), and many others report that the stick is faster, likely because you can usually move it closer to the device and it's not running from a hub that's also doing other things;
  1. If you ever run into a "ghost node" problem and can't remove it from Hubitat's Z-Wave Settings, sometimes it's easier with the stick and Z-Wave PC Controller; and

  2. Being able to join S0-only devices without security if preferred.

The third thing may be of particular interest for you with the LZW42 bulbs you have. Inovelli is testing a firmware update that offers a different pairing procedure for secure (S0) vs non-secure pairing, but with the current production firmware, it will try for S0 and pair as such on a C-7, where you don't get a choice if the device asks. (This is a Z-Wave SDK limitation that PC Controller can work around; it's also not a problem on the C-5, which uses older Z-Wave hardware and isn't certified and offers you the ability to choose.) Pairing these--and a few other--devices with S0 has been problematic for some people, so I'd avoid it (and S0 in general whenever you can) if possible. There are some other devices where this has been reported to be problematic, like the Zooz 4-in-1, and others that don't support separate S0 vs. non-secure pairing methods where you still might want to avoid it if you can (e.g., lots of Monoprice sensors).

Prophetic. After moving the bulb closer to the hub, it proceeded over the next hour to the point that it showed 100% ... then an error, indicating that it could not transfer.

Rather than try again, I walked through the Inovelli how-to. 10 minutes later, firmware was updated and the bulb was added sans security.

The sad part is that I paid more for the stick than the bulb. If this ends up being the main value, then it means that I have a >$50 RGBW bulb. Well, at least it seems to be working much better and I learned something.

I have all Inovelli switches and I am having similar problems trying to upgrade the firmware. I looked at this Inovelli article:

But when I click on the link it provides to get the software I takes me to a site that says:

Can someone help please?
