Just wanted to share some info on the Global Cache iTach WF2IR device. I decided to “bite the bullet” and get one of these to use with BPTWORLD’s app to Hubitat enable my IR devices. I ordered one and it arrived and I was excited to have a new gadget to play with. Setup was fairly easy but... you attach to the unit initially on its local WiFi ssid and configure it via web browser. Right away I had problems. My MacBook couldn’t see the WiFi ssid and I eventually got my iPad to connect. The connection was extremely sluggish. I managed to get the device configured to connect to my WiFi in infrastructure mode. I pinged the device and was seeing a 95% packet failure. I noticed that the specs said it was 802.11b which “should” allow it to work okay with my AmpliFi router. I tried numerous things to improve the connection with no luck. After being frustrated for a couple of days, I returned it to Amazon and got them to ship a replacement. I got the replacement in and had the same issue. I got out an old Apple AirPort Extreme and configured it and attached, same issue. So I got out and old Apple Airport express which is 802.11g vintage, attached, same thing. After scouring the internet, I found a reference to a guy that had identical problems and after much diagnosis he determined that not only was it 802.11b, which I knew by that point, but an early implementation of that standard. I returned the other unit and now have the Ethernet version on order. I’m hoping to have better luck. I’m still having trouble with a company selling a device with such archaic technology in it these days.
First I hear of anyone having an issue with anything GC makes. I actually have one on order so will see next week how it goes.
As for the spec, it's right on the product site... (404 Error)
Yes but it apparently isn't true 802.11b and modern routers that do 802.11AC, etc apparently have issues talking to it. I did see a support article on one of the Global Cache forums that showed you how to "dumb down" a Ubiquiti Unifi config to talk to it. I couldn't find any setting to do similar to the Ubiquiti Amplifi, Apple Airport Extreme or Apple Airport Express.Believe me I wanted the Wifi version to work since it will be across the room from where my wired wall plate is. I will probably have to run another cat6 through the attic. After spending a great deal of time troubleshooting I was really bummed out that it wouldn't work. I look forward to getting the ethernet version so that I can setup your app and give it a whirl.
I am happy to report that I received my IP2IR today and have set it up and configured it and it works perfectly!. The WF2IR units (both of the ones that I was shipped) were definitely a NOGO. The ethernet version works flawlessly and I am anxious to dive into @bptworld 's app. So far so good... the device is solid on the network and I am off and running....
