Ghost in the Machine Mystery

Okay, detectives, I've got a mystery for you...

So in my master bedroom we've got 3 table lamps, each with Sengled Classic Zigbee bulbs. I've got a GE/Enbrighten Z-Wave switch I put in. I've got a "Master Bedroom Lights" group I added via the Groups and Scenes app with those 3 bulbs. I've got 2 simple automation rules to sync the Master Bedroom Lights group to the switch (so the switch knows the state if it's set via automations, etc). I also control the group via Alexa, but that seems to work fine.

So the mystery is... Why does it currently show all of these lights on when

A) Nobody / nothing turned them on, and
B) They're not actually on

It seems like it always starts with my nightstand light deciding it's on and triggering the others:

I previously had set up the mirror app to keep these 2 in sync, but that actually turned on the lights (one time at 1:30 AM ) so I switched to these simple automation rules. I didn't realize they were showing as "on" for a while until I set up Homebridge and could see the lights on the Home app as "on".

So what could be causing this ghost in the machine? I'm thinking of maybe replacing the bulb in my nightstand and see if it stops, but I thought I'd see if anyone else has thoughts.

is the GE switch z wave or z wave plus?

It's ZWave Plus. It's this one:

ok, so it's not the switch holding onto a state

are the devices linked with anything else? check the devices and the "In Use By" section on the bottom. if you're using Alexa, do you have Hunches disabled?

Are hunches turned on in alexa?

I hadn't turned on any of the hunches actions. I affirmatively turned off the hunches suggestions yesterday.

The devices are only part of the group, in my one dashboard, and shared with the Maker API for Homebridge.

....and it happened again. This time apparently at 12:35 AM. It looks like it was my nightstand kicking it off again, which sets the group, which sets the switch. But then it was like 14-15 minutes before the two other bulbs were marked "on" and none of them ever actually turned on.

Oh, and the individual devices are not shared with Alexa, just the groups, so I don't think Alexa could have turned on just my nightstand.

do you have logging enabled for the devices as well? there might be something around 12:35AM that turns on the nightstand (or at least sends the event) that's triggering everything

Is pre-staging turned off on the individual bulbs? I think that was causing the same behavior with my grouped Sengled bulbs.

In the group is it set to show the group as on if any member is on?

I also turned off Group Messaging Optimizations. I don't remember why.

I do, but by the time I noticed the log was too far back. Last time though there was nothing else that happened around the same time.

Pre-staging is off... Zigbee group messaging is on, "Use group device to indicate if any members are on?" is on, and "Enable on/off optimization?" is on.

I'm trying turning off group messaging first.

Interesting... when I made that change it did it again

Well... when I turned off the on/off optimization it just didn't work anymore. When I turned it back on so all the settings were the same as original... it stopped happening for the last few days. Weird.
